By MBIIIEffect

It appears as though there may be a bright side to this draft that we just had. Everyone is screaming about how awful our draft was. Let them scream. One thing that we know about these guys is that they sure as hell won’t be making big money right off the bat. That’s where DeMarcus Ware comes into the picture. Some of the money that could have been given to a second-round pick could eventually end up in his pocket. While a new deal hasn’t been finalized yet, Ware seems to be anything but frustrated about his new deal according to this blog from the Dallas Morning News.

On his contract talks, he said they are getting “closer,” and that he is not frustrated a deal hasn’t been completed yet. He sounded slightly peeved over the weekend when he was asked by Brad Sham about the talks…

“I feel like it’s somewhere in there,” Ware said. “It’s not 51. It might not be 100. It’s somewhere between the two. Maybe it’s 94.”

That’s like music to my ears. It’s nice to see a player not whining about his contract, a la Greg Ellis a few years back. DeMarcus knows that he’s going to get paid, and Jerry Jones knows that he has to shell out some serious cash to do that. He knows Jerry won’t let the star of his defense go hungry, as Ware is scheduled to make only $1.009 million in 2009. But still, it’s great to hear that last year’s sack leader isn’t getting all grumpy about money.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters at the Senior Bowl today that the organization has begun talks with DeMarcus Ware for a long-term deal.

I discussed this in a prior post but let me recap. The Cowboys will have to be inventive to sign Ware because they have $10 million in cap space without drafting one rookie in the 2009 draft.

So, what kind of salary will Ware demand as the NFL’s sack leader and arguably the best defensive player in football? The Indianapolis Colts gave Dwight Freeney a six-year deal worth $72 million. Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen has a six-year,$74 million contract with a whopping $31 million guaranteed.

Expect the Cowboys to offer Ware something like a five-year deal worth between $72-75 million with at least $30 million guaranteed. It is a huge contract that will strap the Cowboys in free agency, even if they dump Terrell Owens who doesn’t help the Cowboys salary cap figures at all.
