Twitter blew it up with all the players visiting teams and Redskin fans crying about how myself and fellow Landry Hat writer Mark Contreras believe that Redskins are still going to be at the Bottom of the Food Chain (If you didn’t read our articles, you can find them here and here).

Cowboys Release CB Terence Newman, K David Buehler

The Dallas Cowboys celebrated the official NFL new year by releasing veterans Terence Newman and David Buehler Tuesday afternoon. With the $10 million salary cap penalty levied on Dallas earlier this week by the league, these two releases became a “no-brainer”. Especially since the Cowboys started today $2.7 million over the cap. These moves are probably just the tip of the iceberg as Owner and GM Jerry Jones has promised that the Cowboy’s front office would be very active in free agency.

Newman was drafted by the Cowboys with the fifth overall pick back in the 2003. The 33 year old veteran has spent his entire nine year career with Dallas. Newman has had a wonderful career with the Cowboys but it was evident last season that Father Time had finally caught up with him. Hopefully, a new environment can reinvigorate his career.

By cutting Newman, Dallas will save an estimated $4 – $6 million on this year’s salary cap. The Cowboys are expected to pursue his replacement in free agency. The Chiefs’ Brandon Carr appears to be at the top of that list of candidates.

Kicker David Buehler became expendable after first year phenom Dan Bailey proved himself last season, breaking many rookie and Cowboy kicking records along the way. Team officials were criticized last year for keeping both kickers on the roster. Buehler’s biggest asset has always been his long kick ability that created touchbacks during kick-offs. But recent injuries combined with last year’s rule change that shorten the yardage on all kick-offs spelled today’s end to the “two kicker” experiment. Buehler was scheduled to earn $1.26 million this season.

Dallas Cowboy Kicker David Buehler is Out; Placed on IR for Groin Injury

A very hot topic around Cowboy Nation has been the debate of whether or not the Dallas Cowboys should have two kickers on their active 53 man roster. Well, it seems that question has been unfortunately answered by a season ending injury. Specialty kicker David Buehler has re-aggravated his groin injury and been placed on Injured Reserve.

The third year kicker was only on the team for his ability to produce touchbacks during kickoffs. Rookie Dan Bailey won the field goal responsibilities from Buehler during the preseason, relegating him to kickoffs only. And many fans questioned the need for having both kickers on the roster. (more…)
