On Saturday February 2, 2013 the new members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame were announced. Joining the hallowed halls of Canton are former Cowboys Head Coach Bill Parcells, and a man he once nicknamed Secretariat, Larry Allen. The nickname by Parcells was a jab at Allen who was not a sprinter, but it also was rather fitting in a different way. Just as Secretariat was the greatest racehorse to ever grace the earth, Larry Allen may be the greatest Dallas Cowboy to ever do the same. I’ll come back to that high praise statement later.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame voting board is comprised of writers from every NFL city and six others chosen for their general skills and reputation as respected media. I mean no offense to any of them, nor to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when I say this, but I find the fact that writers and media members are the litmus test for inclusion or exclusion from the Hall of Fame to be monumentally silly. Very few of them know a thing about the game of football, and have no idea how great some of these athletes truly are. I mean no earthly clue.

If not writers, who do I think should make up the board of voters? To me the easy answer is the enshrined athletes themselves. They know greatness when they see it. Many of them faced each other. They know who is deserving and who isn’t. To illustrate this please allow me to point you to a moment from Larry Allen’s career that has impressed Dallas Cowboys fans for nearly two decades.

The exact date was December 19, 1994. The Dallas Cowboys made a trip south to The Big Easy to face the New Orleans Saints in the very same Superdome venue that just hosted the Super Bowl and introduced the new Hall of Famers to the whole watching world. In the second quarter the Cowboys were in Saints territory near the 30 yard line. A Troy Aikman pass intended for Michael Irvin on a slant was tipped at the Line of Scrimmage and picked off by Saints Linebacker Darian Conner who would have scored if not for Larry Allen.
