Sporting News Scouts is claiming already that the Dallas Cowboys are as good as advertised after their week one blow out of the Cleveland Browns (who made my top 10 in the power rankings before the season began).

Zig Fracassi writes:

“It may be a bit premature to put the Cowboys in the Super Bowl, but if they deliver more performances like they did against a playoff caliber team like Browns on the road, then Dallas will indeed be as good as advertised.”

Zig, it is premature to put anyone in the Super Bowl right now. Did the New York Giants teach you anything last year? Meanwhile, Sporting News cohort Ken Ilchuk isn’t drinking Zig’s Kool-Aid:

Let’s be honest, this just isn’t a very good Browns team the Cowboys played yesterday. QB Derek Anderson missed part of the preseason due to a concussion and still looked to be shaking some rust off in game one. RB Jamal Lewis was a game time decision and was running on a swollen hammy. Braylon Edwards is coming off a foot injury that forced him to miss much of the preseason (and much of the opener based on what I saw). The defense is adjusting to life without Antwan Peek. This really is a team not ready for prime time.

Yikes. Ken’s really pulling strings here to downplay the Cowboys big win Sunday.

First off, Anderson should not still be reeling from a concussion he sustained nine months ago. If he is still reeling from that, he needs to retire. The injury to Lewis had some effect on his play, but Edwards had no reported problems with his foot injury. As for the loss of Antwan Peek, that defense wasn’t going to stop that team it battled on Sunday if it had a healthy Shawne Merriman and Dwight Freeney. I am not saying the Cowboys played the best Browns team, but I am also not going to discredit that win Sunday at the DawgPound.

Both writers touch on the 11 penalties the Cowboys committed, and certainly it is something the coaches must address. But those 11 penalties played no factor in the game when it is 28-10. I guess it could have been 44-10 or 28-0 if those penalties were not committed. The point is, the Cowboys still won big. Those penalties could end up being factors in a close game, of which this was not one. Ken goes on and on about why he’s not ready to send the Cowboys to Tampa, and that’s all fine and dandy. We’re not going to go there here at thelandryhat. It is much too early to start making bold predictions. We have a game Monday night against rival Philadelphia, and another big win would bring the Cowboys closer to that overall goal. Let’s take this season game by game.

As for Marion Barber, I am not sure we have to worry if he misses a game or two, or some snaps here and there. After watching the performances the two rookies, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, gave in week one, the Cowboys seem to be covered in the backfield when there’s a touch of adversity knocking on the door.
