Every Dallas Cowboys fan would love to see top free-agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha suit up for the ‘Boys next season but the closer we get to a new labor deal and free agency, the less likely it seems that Asomugha will wear the star.

One of the only ways that Dallas could land Asomugha is if they release veteran Terrance Newman and open up some cap space. While that move is not too ridiculous, Jerry Jones has said Newman and Mike Jenkins will both return to the team this season and he expects them in their top form.

So without cap space created from Newman’s release, it really is a big longshot for Dallas to land the elite cover corner. Matt Mosley of Fox Sports Southwest wrote today: (more…)

Free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is creating some serious waves. Everyone wants to speculate where the top corner will go and free agency has yet to start. Imagine the madness when Asomugha officially hits the market. SI.com’s Peter King calls Asomugha’s free agency a race for “the best defensive free agent since Deion Sanders.”

It is possible that Asomugha returns to Oakland, however, other teams have been gaining steam as potential suitors for his services. The Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys are the most likely destinations. The New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks are also possible.

Wait a second, the Cowboys?!

“Go back in history. Remember when Jerry Jones, against the wishes of son Steven, gave Deion Sanders a $13 million signing bonus in 1995 to come to Dallas? (Jerry thought his son was going to punch him over it.) Jones has the ability to fit Asomugha under his cap. With Tony Romo and DeMarcus Ware the only huge-money players on the roster, the Joneses can find a way to shoehorn an Asomugha contract into the fold,” King wrong in his Monday Morning Quarterback column.

There is no way that this news will not get Cowboys fans excited. It is common knowledge that the ‘Boys need help in the secondary and Asomugha is the best player that they will be able to add to the unit. The move must be done.

Jerry Jones has been known to make a splash or two in the past, so let’s wait and see if he does so this free agency period.

There is no question that the weakness of the Dallas Cowboys defense last season was the secondary. Game after game there would be a breakdown somewhere in coverage and you would see opposing teams beating the defense “deep.

It is already being reported that the Cowboys will be looking to bolster their secondary when the free agency period finally picks up by going after a safety. , but there is another player who will be under fire — cornerback Mike Jenkins.

Scouts Inc.’s Matt Williamson offered up his analysis on which Cowboys player needs to improve the most, in his latest “Pressure Points” feature. He writes:

“He is still a very young man — 26 years old — and he is not declining physically. His movement skills were not as strong last season. Maybe there were injuries that not everyone was aware of. Jenkins was too aggressive, gave up too many big plays and ended up taking too many pass interference calls when he guessed wrong. Jenkins needs to pay much more attention to every nuance of the position. New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan might be able to help.”

I don’t necessarily think the drop off in production this past season was all Jenkins’ fault. Former head coach Wade Phillips, who also ran the defense, was putting Jenkins and fellow cornerback Terrance Newman, in bad positions weekly. Jenkins was often out on an island, instead of playing in a zone which is where he excelled. You could see an improvement in Jenkins’ game once Paul Pasqualoni took over the defense.

Regardless of the scheme, Jenkins will need to improve and I believe he will. As long as he has been studying Rob Ryan’s new defensive scheme, we should see a new and improved Mike Jenkins when the season starts. The best part about Jenkins improving? Dallas has all of the makings of an incredible defense if he can return to his Pro Bowl form.
