When a new CBA is reached, all unsigned players with four years or more of NFL experience will become unrestricted free agents. What that means is the talent pools at certain positions will get deeper and one position that benefits is safety.

It’s no secret that the Cowboys need a veteran safety, so it should come as no surprise that the Cowboys will be ecstatic to have more free agents to talk to.

Melvin Bullitt of the Colts, San Diego’s Eric Weddle and Chicago’s Danieal Manning will all be free to sign wherever they please.

Whoever the Cowboys end up getting at the position will be an ugrade from what they have and the new CBA rules would allow the team to sign a higher quality player.

Going into April’s draft one of the biggest area’s of concern for the Cowboys and their fans was the secondary. Now as the lockout continues and the season remains on hold the secondary will still be a big question mark once free agency begins.

Another name that has been thrown out there in recent days as a possible targeted free agent is current Eagles safety Quintin Mikell.

Mikell is unlikely to resign with the Eagles once the lock out is over and would be a good fit with the Cowboys at safety. Mikell was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003 by the Eagles, where he spent the first 4 seasons as a backup to Brian Dawkins and spent the last 4 season as a starter for the Eagles.

Though Mikell may not be the biggest name out there as far as free agents, he may be the most familiar with the Cowboys and he fits a need in safety a position the Cowboys are looking to improve on.

Mikell may not be a big name free agent, but the Cowboys maybe able to get him cheaper than they could another free agent and then be able to address other needs. I myself would like to see the Cowboys go after a big name and potentially better player such as Michael Huff or Nnamdi Asomugha. I am sure Mikell is a good player but I just don’t know if I want the Cowboys to sign him when they maybe could get someone else who could be a better fit.

What do you think, should the Cowboys give Quintin Mikell a look? Are the Cowboys fine in the secondary with what they have? Should the Cowboys go for a bigger free agent?

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd was supposed to battle for the second-receiver spot on the team until Miles Austin became a star.

Now he is fifth on the depth chart and owner Jerry Jones has even said that practice team guys like Jesse Holley, who won Michael Irvin’s contest, and Manny Johnson are learning quickly skill sets to make them effective players in the NFL.

So where does this leave Sam Hurd? Hurd has becomes what Miles Austin was. As a restricted free agent, Hurd has options, and some teams could really use a guy that many believe has not had a real opportunity to shine in the NFL. He has just seven catches in 2009. Seven. He was injured from time to time, too. He has decent heighth but does he possess any other skill set that makes him a necessary signing? He really doesn’t get much play.

Jones said in late January that “he’d sleep like a baby” if the Cowboys ignored grabbing any wide receivers in the NFL draft.

I am not saying the Cowboys need another wide receiver, but if a guy whose ranked high falls for some reason, don’t you often want to select the best player on the board in some of these rounds? Roy Williams is getting one more year to prove himself because for cripes sake the guy is supposed to be the Cowboys No. 1 go-to guy and he’s not even Tony Romo’s third option. This has to be his final year and Williams must produce.

If he does, that all bodes well for a Cowboys team already solid on defense. Add some offensive lineman depth, consider doing something with Flozell Adams, and aim for a sixth Lombardi trophy.
