Safeties may not be regarded as the most important defensive positions in the NFL. In this generation many football experts would say that the most important defensive position is an elite pass rusher. But this should not minimize how valuable safeties can be, as they are often the final barrier in keeping the opposing offenses out of the end zone.

The Dallas Cowboys have had some good safeties including 6 time Pro Bowler Cliff Harris(1970-1979), Charlie Waters(1970-1981) with 3 Pro Bowls, 5 time Pro Bowler Darren Woodson(1992-2003), and Roy Williams(2002-2008) with 5 Pro Bowls. While Roy Williams was great at stopping the run, his weakness was giving up big pass plays. Williams was released after the 2008 season. Since then, the Cowboys have been trying to find a tandem of safeties with better cover skills to adjust to a more passing friendly NFL. (more…)

What would have been the Dallas Cowboys sixth Super Bowl appearance in 1982 was squelched with what is now infamously known as “the catch.” Charlie Waters, 6’1”, 193 pound strong safety, still believes they would have made the championship game had San Francisco 49ers, Joe Montana thrown to the tight end he was defending instead of Dwight Clark. Waters would end his football playing career that dreadful night. (more…)

The Cowboys’ Ring of Honor carries more weight with me than the Hall of Fame. It just does. When Michael Irvin was on the verge of induction, we didn’t have to hear all the ridiculous character attacks that we did when he was being considered for the Hall of Fame. When it comes to election into the Ring, we don’t have to concern ourselves with the bias of the national media. Guys like Cliff Harris and Lee Roy Jordan have been repeatedly snubbed by the HOF, but we can take comfort in the fact that they’ve been given their rightfully places in the ROH. (more…)
