By now, we are all somewhat over the Thursday nights high of selecting the best defensive player in the 2012 draft, cornerback Morris Claiborne. Claiborne is a solid playmaking cover corner, but he has been described by most NFL scouts as the highest ranked CB coming out of college in years. His grades have not seen since former Dallas Cowboy and current Hall of Famer Deion “Prime Time” Sanders.

That being said, I think it is time to look at the other side of the draft and ask, just who is the next Tony Romo? By that I mean a low round or undrafted FA that has NFL star written all over him.

After reviewing both our draft picks and UDFA signings, and taking into account each players combine #’s, college career highlights, and listening to his enthusiastic draft phone call, the answer couldn’t be a simpler one, it’s former Virginia Tech WR Danny Coale.

http://www.dallascowboys.com/multimedia/multimedia_center.cfm?id=FA564146-D85A-8F59-2EB4AFF8577B8A5F

Even ESPN draft guru Todd McShay, seemed to indicate that Coale will be a special late-round pick in this year’s draft. Just weeks prior to the draft, McShay stated “I just love his toughness, the way he plays, his ability to catch the ball in traffic. I’m not saying he’s going to be a number one [receiver], but I am saying that he can be a very productive slot receiver in the NFL and stay in this league for a long time.”

The touchdown was overturned when the ball came in contact with the ground. Mandatory Credit: John David Mercer-US PRESSWIRE

Coale is probably best remembered for what appeared to be an amazing overtime touchdown catch that was controversially overturned in the 2012 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans against Michigan. That missed opportunity has thankfully lead him to Dallas, and from his rumored eight hour workout days since that night, and the sound in his voice, it will not be the last big Bowl play of young Danny Coale’s career. Something in my gut just tells me that an ironic return trip to the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, exactly one year after that memorable play awaits Dallas’s newest slot receiver, only this time, there is no controversy, and Mr. Coale walks off the Superdome field an Ironic Champion.
