It was widely reported this week that former Chicago Bear linebacker Brian Urlacher has decided to hang up his cleats. Although the eight-time Pro Bowler and current free agent felt like he still had some gas left in the tank, in an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Urlacher claimed he would have only signed with one NFL team other than the Bears.

“If I could have picked a spot, it would have been Dallas…(The Cowboys) run our defense. They took our (defensive) coordinator. That would have been ideal. But they have two really good young linebackers.” (via dallascowboys.com)

Executive vice president Stephen Jones said the Cowboys flirted with the idea of bringing in Urlacher, but with current studs Sean Lee and Bruce Carter already on the roster, it just didn’t make much sense. Still, the Cowboys did sign linebackers Ernie Sims and Justin Durant this off-season. Other then the $2 million price tag, why not give the five-time All-Pro one last shot? Especially when you consider the injury history to both Lee and Carter.

But what do you think???

The first day of the Dallas Cowboys’ organized team activities was more about who was “not” on the field as opposed to who was. Quarterback Tony Romo announced Tuesday that he had back surgery last month to remove a cyst. The surgery will require him to be sidelined for the next two-three weeks. Romo downplayed the severity of the injury saying he could play if he had too.

“It was just kind of like ‘What is this? Let’s go take care of this…There was no ‘Woah, that’s the biggest thing I’ve ever seen!’ It was just a little cyst, so we just took it out and they said ‘OK, you’re good.’”

Running back DeMarco Murray, no stranger to injury himself, sat out of Tuesday’s practice due to a “tweaked” hamstring. Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett described the move as the team simply being extra careful:

”We understand it’s May 21st and we’re going to err on the side of caution with all of our players….We anticipate seeing him (Murray) here in the next couple practices…probably early next week.”
