The Dallas Cowboys’ Travis Frederick is a beast. At 6’ 4” and 340 lbs you would expect him to be. The guy breaks bones…in practice (seriously, the guy has accidentally broken his own teammates bones).

Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

His former coach, Bart Miller, states he has seen Frederick squat 700 lbs. and bench 430. After just a couple of days into rookie mini-camp, Nate Newton described Travis as “a mauler…who finishes people”. Perhaps just as importantly, Newton also described him as “a technician”.

You can never underestimate a player’s intelligence and work ethic, and Frederick has both in spades. Not only did Frederick finish high school early, but he graduated college ahead of pace with a computer engineering degree. He is a dedicated athlete that, according to former coaches, spends hours watching film and studying the defenses he’s going up against. Combine that with the size of the man, and Travis becomes a very exciting prospect.

A smart player like Frederick could limit mistakes and missed assignments, which have previously led to Romo sacks, fumbles, and injuries. How much is that worth to this team?

News from camp on Gavin Escobar is that he has been showing good progress in his pass and turn out blocking, just needing to work on consistency. Although the main word out of camp has been about his incredible hands, ability to catch in traffic, and tendency to run over people after the catch. He has also received high praise on his route running and natural instincts. I like a lot of what I’m hearing about this kid, he already has great receiving ability and if he continues to work on his blocking he could truly become an every situation tight end and (dare I say), eventual replacement for Witten. Admittedly, this is highly premature at this point.

Terrance Williams has been said to have a very fluid running style with great ability to change his momentum. He has great footwork, and shows toughness when completing the catch and turning the play inside. I think this kid’s agility and quickness are going to surprise people.

J.J. Wilcox, I really like this guy. Covers like a safety and hits like a linebacker. Reportedly can play a little too aggressive at times, but I’m hoping that the coaches here in Dallas can teach him a little responsibility and maturity in the position without losing the natural aggression and attitude he brings to the table.

That covers the top four, and to be honest I like what I’m hearing so far. The Cowboy’s vision for this draft seems to be a little clearer. I was as disappointed and skeptical as anyone after the draft had initially ended, but it’s time to relax, at least temporarily give the collective minds at Valley Ranch the benefit of the doubt, and see how things shake out.

I have to be honest that I was left a little dismayed last Saturday night, but a lot has changed since then. After a week to re-evaluate our situation, a week to calm down from the immediate kneejerk reaction and get some real perspective, I don’t feel that we fared too poorly. (more…)
