It is now two years into the Jason Garrett/Rob Ryan experiment in Dallas and I have to say I still am not even close to being impressed. Especially in the aftermath of the disastrous loss by the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football to the Chicago Bears. Maybe losing is just in the family tree for defensive coordinator Ryan.

Oct 1, 2012; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan reacts in the second half against the Chicago Bears at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
Rob’s father, Buddy Ryan failed to win as a head coach during his 25 year career, despite making it to the Super Bowl as an assistant three times . His brother, Rex, faces a similar dilemma in New York as the head coach for the Jets. After making it to the AFC championship game in his first two seasons, Rex failed to make the playoffs last year going 8-8.

As for Rob Ryan, I am still not seeing it in Dallas. He said he needed more physical cornerbacks. Well, Ryan had four in the game last night and the Bears still seemed to find a way to line wideout Brandon Marshall up in the slot against a safety. Adjustments, anyone?

His defense still only has pressure because of linebacker DeMarcus Ware. I still am not seeing pressure from anywhere else, as his great genius scheme promised.

On the other side of the ball, Garrett’s offense has regressed to the point of being one of the worst in the NFL. His plan to make the Dallas offensive line more athletic has left it only more pathetic.

Finally, I cannot even begin to mention how disappointed I am in Dez Bryant and his lack of effort and intelligence. Put it all together, Cowboy fans, and unless we make a big blockbuster trade or bring back a quality head coach, the recipe in Dallas is for some humble pie and an 8-8 season…at best.

As the old saying goes there is no “I” in team, well Cowboy fans it also looks like there is no “O” in Dallas. After watching Tony Romo get beat up by a Buccaneers team that gave up over 600 yards in total offense the prior week to the NY Giants, and struggle against a very average Seattle team, I think it is time to ask – just what is wrong with the offense in Dallas?

Is it Jason Garrett’s play calling, numerous dropped passes, an unstable O-line, multiple false start and holding penalities, or did we just over-rate the offensive talent of our football team? I liked that Garrett tried to at least mix things up somewhat and went No-Huddle at times Sunday like this Landry Hat writer suggested some weeks back, but more changes are needed if our Cowboys are going to challenge the elite teams in this league.

Where are the double back sets using Murray and Jones together out of the backfield so they can run short check off passing routes, and where are the deep pass attempts by Romo? Other then the Ogletree pass in week one, Garrett has all but forgotten the deep BIG play that this offense is built on. This offense has no Identity and is currently ranked in the bottom 3rd of the NFL right in the same spot as the Cleveland Browns & Jacksonville Jaguars. This conservative boring offense style needs to change Immediately. With over 80% of every NFL team running the same offensive plays, the only distinct advantage you can gain is by speeding up your pace and calling non conservative plays at times when the defense can’t make the necessary adjustments. With pass interference penalities at a all time high due to the replacemnet refs, and the #1 ranked defense in the NFL, it is time for the Cowboys to finally take off the training wheels and let it fly by running a deep attack No Huddle Offense the entire game. This is the only way this years team can only begin to think about achieving its goal of another word that requires an “O” - The SuperBowl.

In fact, I think I have a comparison that is very similar to our current situation that can still allow us to still have some major hope for this 2012 Season.

Aug 29, 2012; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett on the side lines during the second quarter of the game against the Miami Dolphins at Cowboys Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE

All we need to do is remember the 1992 Dallas Cowboys for inspiration. That team which was arguably the best Dallas Cowboy team ever, beat the then Superbowl champion Washington Redskins in the Monday Night Football opener. After that big win, Dallas would then get blown out on the road by the Philadelphia Eagles in week 4 by the very similar score of 31-7.

That Dallas team also had a young inexperienced aggressive defense, a young star running back, a controversial #88 at wide-receiver, and a quarterback who needed to take charge and put it all together to reach his full potential as a MVP and Superbowl Champion. The final result – the 1992 Cowboys rebounded at home the next week, ironically shutting out the Seattle Seahawks, 27-0. They then went on to finish the season 13-3, become NFC East Champions, and won the NFC Title game in San Francisco against the #1 seed 49ers.

I am not saying we didn’t hit a speed bump on Sunday. But if I was head coach Jason Garrett, I would draw this comparison between the greatest Cowboy team ever. A team he was a member of. It only proves that a season is not lost with one blow-out road loss. This season is far from over.
