With the 28th overall selection in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select Taco Charlton.

The Dallas Cowboys posted an impressive 13-3 regular season record in 2016, mainly due to an extraordinary draft class that included quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott. Prescott won the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award while both players were considerations as possible league MVP candidates.

But the Cowboys success from last season comes at a price. Given the 28th overall selection in the first round of Thursday’s NFL Draft, Dallas had to hope a special player fell to them late in the round. After months of speculation, we finally know who that player is…

Here’s what you need to know about the Cowboys’ newest player:

Height: 6’5″
Weight: 277 lbs.
Combine 40 Speed/Bench Press: 4.91/25
2016 Numbers: 40 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks

Player Breakdown: This is a raw, quick twitch pass rusher, that has shown flashes of becoming a terrific NFL starter at defensive end. Should benefit from having a consistent coaching staff in Dallas. CBS Sports draft analyst and co-host of the DallasCowboys.com Draft Show Dane Brugler says Charlton reminds him of Notre Dame’s Justin Tuck.

Cowboys Analysis: A solid pick here. Charlton is a player who would benefit from having time to develop. Unfortunately, being drafted in the first round, Taco will be expected to produce immediately in Dallas. He should be penciled in as the Cowboys day one starter at right defensive end even though he’ll likely not be ready for it.
