If Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is spearheading the Oakland Raiders move to Las Vegas, it would be the most surest risk of his career.

For years, there has been discussion of an NFL team going to Las Vegas or any professional team for that matter. The fact that prostitution and gambling is legal in the Sin City has only shed negative light to the idea of a professional team operating there. Until now.

Because when Jerry Jones backs an idea, he usually makes more money on it than he spends. The more money he makes for the league the better it is for business and business is good.

Jones has always been a wild cat and always took risks. The Dallas Cowboys owner started taking risks early in life. After graduating college he borrowed a million dollars from Jimmy Hoffa’s Teamsters Union to fund a chain of pizza parlors. That venture failed.

Jerry went to work at his fathers insurance company for a time. Then for a second time, he tried using the Teamsters money to buy the AFL’s San Diego Chargers. That failed. In 1970 the Razorback alum received his masters degree in Business and then he took another risk. He went into the oil business. That venture succeeded and succeeded big.

In 1989 guess what the Los Angeles native did? He took a risk. Jones bought the laughing stock of the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys. Then, he did the unthinkable. Jerry fired legendary head coach Tom Landry in favor of his former college football teammate, Jimmy Johnson. Once Jones learned the in’s and out’s of the general manager role, he fired Tex Schramm a few months later. Jerry assumed Schramm’s duties as general manager to this day.

All these risks, most which at the time seemed mind boggling and fans absolutely hated produced three Super Bowl titles and the most recognized brand in the world. The Cowboys are worth $4 billion making it the most valuable team in the world. All of these accomplishments were produced because of Jones’ risks.

Now, Jones is spearheading another risky venture to get an NFL franchise into America’s gambling capital. The franchise that would like to be moved there is the Oakland Raiders owned by Mark Davis. Davis has already created a new stadium plan that was signed into law Monday by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. So now, Davis has to convince Jones and the 30 other owners that this deal is going to generate a lot of money, and that it will be great for the league.

Which in popular opinion it will. As long as Jones is on board, so will the other owners. As long as most of the owners are on board so is NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, as he works on behalf the owners. At least, that’s what one would think. Its been reported that Goodell may publicly support the move to Vegas but is not really sold on it because of the “image” factor. In the end, its believed that Jerry will win this negotiation.

Jones has proven to be innovative and a world class marketer. If he is supporting this move then most likely Goodell would too. When a person takes a 1-15 team and turns them around to make their worth accumulate $4 billion in three decades, why would anyone question that business sense? Jerry Jones may be on cusp of quarterbacking the most reliable risk of his career yet.
