Lightning in a bottle: Is it Ramsey or Elliott for the Cowboys?

Now that the Dallas Cowboys are sticking to the fourth overall pick, who is more likely to play for America’s Team, Jalen Ramsey or Ezekiel Elliott?

Let the fireworks around Dallas Cowboys Nation begin.

According to Jon Machota from the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are likely staying with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, opting to avoid trade scenarios with other teams that are looking to slide up, which would come at a high cost.

The news comes as a surprise considering the compensation packages teams delivered to land the first overall pick (Los Angeles Rams) and second overall spot (Philadelphia Eagles).

Nonetheless, with owner and general manager Jerry Jones “most likely” sticking with the team’s fourth pick, Cowboys world can now focus on who the top pick will be once and for all.

Despite two suspensions looming over the Cowboys top defensive ends in Randy Gregory and DeMarcus Lawrence, which will hold the pair out for four games each, the draw of the card seems to fall down to two players: Jalen Ramsey and Ezekiel Elliott.

Defensive end Joey Bosa hasn’t impressed Dallas management, while many believe nabbing him at number four would be a stretch for the Ohio State product.

Myles Jack seems to have new bad news on his knee everyday leading up to the draft.

Once again, this highlights two marquee players who have not only the ability to play day one, but the potential to unlock some missing magic that’s been missing since the 1990’s.

Ramsey, if selected by the Cowboys, will most likely play cornerback, despite his versatility to play at the safety spot.

It’s been a position that has doomed the Cowboys for years, despite the team focusing on that position in 2012 by selecting Morris Claiborne with the sixth overall pick. Claiborne is a bust, and so is his partner in crime, Brandon Carr — the 50 million dollar man.

The Boys need secondary help. And we’re not talking about pay cuts.

Even if the Cowboys are to secure a playoff spot by conquering the NFC East this year, Dallas will hit roadblocks as competition revs up. A stronger secondary changes that. And Jalen Ramsey is the guy to jumpstart it.

But there’s also a major case for former Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott. Like former Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray in 2014, sometimes the best defense in the game today rests behind a strong offensive line and a runner who can chew yards and time.

Think Elliott is a poor choice at number four? A stretch?

I’m not buying any of it.

The argument that stepping up to take a running back as early as the fourth pick is a waste of a draft choice in the NFL today is nonsense.

The game may garner more interest when the ball is in the air, but the fact is games are won in the ground game. The blueprint hasn’t changed, even in a pass happy league today, and the Cowboys proved it by going 12-4 in 2014 when Murray rushed for a NFL high of 1,845 rushing yards and 13 scores.

Think about this: By selecting Elliott the Cowboys are drafting an extra offensive lineman. Murray was quarterback Tony Romo‘s safety valve. His check down guy. His extra blocker. The guy who helped him carry the load on offense. Of course, these qualities in a running back extends Romo’s time of the field, who turned 36 this month (in case you forgot).

But it also helps remind Romo that he doesn’t have to be the only hero in Dallas, running around the field with the ball in his hands to extend plays. He doesn’t have to do it all, especially with a home run runner standing behind him again.

So, will it be Jalen Ramsey or Ezekiel Elliott?

Hurry up Thursday — we can’t wait!
