Are the Dallas Cowboys overlooking OT Laremy Tunsil?

With the huge Titans-Rams trade, are the Dallas Cowboys overlooking OT Laremy Tunsil now that he will drop? Should the Boys secure him for the RT spot?

He is the other Tyron Smith.

Both play offensive tackle. Both are six-foot-five, 300-plus pounds of pure football machinery.

One is already elite, shifting around the turf to protect the quarterback of America’s Team, Mr. Tony Romo.

The other is considered to be NFL elite ready once he gets his chance to stretch his arms in the NFL world. The city Laremy Tunsil will battle for will be announced on April 28th in Chicago, where the 21-year old will walk on stage holding up his team’s colors and logos.

Could the offensive tackle, who allowed only two sacks in 28 games as a member of the Ole Miss Rebels, be the secret ingredient the Cowboys are mixing behind secret doors, away from curious eyeballs who can’t figure out what the Boys will do on draft night?

The Titans-Rams trade was a big rock thrown into NFL waters that will cause tsunami type effects for years to come. Either way, Dallas, with the fourth overall selection this year, benefits.

If we are to believe that Los Angeles will nab a quarterback with the first pick (either Jared Goff or Carson Wentz), this will leave the Cowboys with terrific options at number four to pick from. The list includes:

• QB Jared Goff or Carson Wentz

• RB Ezekiel Elliot

• DE Joey Bosa

• DB Jalen Ramsey

• LB Myles Jack

All have the ability to play day one.

But are the Boys possibly overlooking offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, who was once locked in as the first pick with the Tennessee Titans? I think so.

And while he won’t be the sexy pick at number four, the same could be said when the Cowboys selected Tyron Smith in 2011 (ninth overall), Travis Frederick in 2013 (31st overall) and Zack Martin in 2014 (16th overall) over the years.

The Cowboys need defense more than offense, but changing the tag line from the “Great Wall” to the “Greatest Wall” should be an enticing marketing tool.

As it stands now, the Cowboys are entering 2016 with four projected starters at the front line graded out as first-round talents. None are over the age of 25. La’el Collins (OG) has proven he eats his Wheaties cereal.

The Debbie Downer of the FAB Five boils down to right tackle Doug Free, who is the old man of the group at 32 years of age. Free, a beast in his own right, has proven to be a great draft pick up (fourth rounder) since joining forces with the Cowboys in 2007. But he is aging. Any vulnerability in the offensive line could spell the word “retirement” out for Tony Romo.

Talk about gone baby gone.

If Romo is to delay Father Time for a few more years, he’ll need the front to be at its best but most importantly, they must remain intact.

Martin’s rookie contract will keep him in Dallas until at least 2017, which is the same year Frederick will need a new contract. According to Spotrac.com, Collins will become a restricted free agent in 2018. Smith is good until 2023.

The challenge to find a terrific offensive front to unclog a team’s arteries is one thing in today’s NFL salary cap world, it’s another to keep them all together.

Personally, I don’t think the Cowboys will draft Tunsil (trade bait maybe?). I also don’t think they’ll go quarterback out the gates but what do I know? My pick goes to Jalen Ramsey or the next best defensive piece on the board. But what we know now is that anything can happen — not just in Big D, but with other teams who have Dallas on speed dial.

That’s why Tunsil shouldn’t be off anybody’s radars. Ah. The joys of dissecting the NFL Draft.
