Dallas Cowboys get an injection of Romomentum

Although the Dallas Cowboys have new life following the return of their starting quarterback, Tony Romo, can he save their season?

Two of the most painful, arduous months in the life of any Dallas Cowboys fan, player or member of this organization got a whole lot better early on Sunday with the return of quarterback Tony Romo.

Prior to the game, win or lose, waking up just seemed a little easier.  Football seemed like it was fun again.  A funny feeling called hope seemed to replace the dark rain cloud that has hovered over.

Of course, perfectly symbolic of the 2015 Dallas Cowboys, an actual huge dark rain cloud was prominent for the first fifteen minutes or so of the game.  Even though the Miami Dolphins started with the ball, they were afforded the opportunity to start the game under sunny skies.

Once the Cowboys stopped them, the rains came.  Hard.  On top of that, the Cowboys had to start their first drive from inside their own five yard line.

After two plays that didn’t do much to inspire any confidence that things would be any different from the last eight weeks, everyone who loves this team got a glimpse of just how things may be about to change.

A crafty, improvised flip of the ball from Romo’s left hand, the same side of his body which houses his newly healed collarbone, failed to gain a first down but simultaneously let us know that we have someone capable of making a play at the game’s most important position.

After that, the clouds parted.  Sunny skies returned and stayed the whole day through.

So did the return to the win column for this team.

It’s just one win.  The Cowboys will need many more if they are to salvage this wreck of a season and turn lemons into lemonade.  For one week though, so much fell back into their perfect little places.

Wide receiver Dez Bryant scored his first touchdown of the season.  His running mate, Terrance Williams, looked like a valid sidekick again.  The defense did not have to continually grab their helmets moments after taking them off.

All was well in the land of the Star.

Now, admittedly Romo did not have his finest performance.  Anyone who expected that however is simply unrealistic.  No one, no matter how talented they are, can sit out that much time and ball out of control.

What he did accomplish was the ability to make plays when they were most needed.

This was never more evident than when the Cowboys fourteen point lead completely dissipated.  Getting the ball back after the Dolphins had all the momentum in the game, Romo led the team on an eight play, eight yard drive that gave Dallas the lead they would never relinquish.

That was never happening with either of the previous two guys running the show.

As if the win wasn’t enough to make things around team feel different, there was also the news of the previous night’s inspirational speech given by Romo.

With all the talk of his return being the last remaining shot at redeeming the season, it was Romo who stood in front of the other 52 guys who have been struggling without him, thanking them for their efforts during his absence.  He openly let them know how much their refusal to quit and the weekly scrutiny they endured while he recovered did not go unnoticed.

Romo told them how he needed them if this miraculous run was going to happen.

That’s exactly what happened too.  Williams had his best game of the year, as did Bryant.  Running back Darren McFadden had his second best yardage total, while playing through a groin strain.  The defense had the most sacks in any game since the meeting against the Patriots.  They even scored their first touchdown of the year.

Will it continue on Thanksgiving against undefeated Carolina?  Who knows?  Romo is the only quarterback in the history of the NFL to have wins against two previous 9-0 teams.  He’s spoiled late season undefeated runs before.  Why not again?

Even if he doesn’t, this team has received life thanks to a much needed shot of Romomentum.

The season is not over.  Just maybe, the clear, sunny skies will stay a while.
