Better tackling, fewer big plays allowed limits opponents’ scoring
Brandon George – Dallasnews.com

"IRVING — The Cowboys defense altered its pregame introductions a week ago before the team played the Giants at AT&T Stadium. Instead of the starters running out one player at a time, the defense was introduced as one group.“That’s the approach we’re taking. Collectively all guys need to feel appreciated and they’re a part of this,” Cowboys defensive end Jeremy Mincey said. “There are no stars on the defense. The defense is the star. I thought it was a great idea by the coaches.”This Cowboys defense is mostly a no-name group that plays with maximum effort on every snap for new coordinator Rod Marinelli. The result has been dramatically different from a year ago under Monte Kiffin, whose defense was the third-worst in NFL history (allowing 415.3 yards per game). Anthony Spencer makes it through full week of practice
Todd Archer – ESPNDallas.com

"IRVING, Texas — For the first time this season, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer went through every day of practice leading into a game. Spencer had been sitting out the “Friday” practices that are typically red-zone and short-yardage days to give his surgically repaired knee a day of rest. Spencer missed all but one game last season and all of training camp this summer as he recovered from microfracture surgery. He is still looking for his first sack after four games but has been credited with eight tackles and four quarterback pressures. He is listed as probable for Monday’s game against the Washington Redskins.“We just believe in practice,” coach Jason Garrett said. “It’s important for guys to get back to practice. You’re obviously trying to get them to be ready for Sunday, and there’s a lot of different ways to do that, but the base way to do that is to make sure they practice as much as they can…” Click the title to read the entire article…"

DeMarco’s Costly Run
DeMarco Murray is off to a historically great start in a contract year. The problem: Every yard he gains could be costing him the big payday he’s trying to earn
Andrew Brandt – mmqb.si.com

"DeMarco Murray is one of the pleasant surprises of the season’s first half, with an astounding 913 yards gained. He’s also fodder for an interesting discussion in the business of football. On the field, he has become everything the Cowboys hoped he would become: a dependable workhorse running back challenging defenses and opening up the passing game. Off the field, his expiring contract sparks a debate regarding his present and future value.Murray’s production illustrates the tricky intersection between a running back’s early-career success and concern over wear and tear. It is inverse to the norm. If we were discussing a player at any other position, prolific production in a contract year would be a major leverage point and a lead item on the résumé of accomplishments. For a running back, however, that fact can be, and often is, used as a negative rather than a positive in contract negotiations. Indeed, one can safely ask this question: Is Murray’s impressive workload and success truly helping his contract drive or is it potentially hurting him? Click the title to read the entire article…"

Marc Sessler – NFL.com

Better Than Dallas
The Cowboys are off to a great start, but they’re not as deep as the Packers…
Andy Benoit – mmqb.si.com

"From a micro standpoint, it makes sense to have the Cowboys atop the power rankings. They’ve won six straight by imposing their run-oriented approach on some very good opponents. From a macro standpoint, however, Dallas is not the NFC’s best team; Green Bay is.The Packers are deeper than the Cowboys (and the rest of the NFC) and can beat opponents in more ways. This will become more apparent as the season progresses, though we’ve already seen recent signs. Against the Vikings in Week 5, the Packers subbed some of their three-receiver base concepts for a more traditional two-back/two-tight end approach. Their offensive line then dominated a Vikings defense that was compelled to be more vanilla, as Eddie Lacy shook out of his season-long slump to rush for 105 yards on 13 carries.
