The Dallas Cowboys take on the Denver Broncos tonight in their final preseason game. On Saturday the final fifty three man roster will be named, so the importance of this game for some is crucial. Negativity continues to follow the team around like a bad smell. Even the usually deluded Jerry Jones tempered expectations:
“You know that we have an uphill battle this year…But most of you had an uphill battle when you came to camp. Most of you did. And some of you have absolutely rose to the occasion. Some of you are taking the challenge on”
Despite the doom and gloom, there are still some tough decisions for the likes of head coach Jason Garrett to make when it comes to the final roster. There’s calls for three quarterbacks, four running backs, six wide receivers and as many players on defense as possible. The roster allows fifty three. So some areas are going to have to give. Here are five players who face make or break tonight.
Dustin Vaughan, Quarterback
Vaughan has undoubtedly impressed the coaching staff since arriving at the Cowboys after going undrafted in this years draft. Earlier this week, Caleb Hanie was cut from the roster, leaving Vaughan, Brandon Weeden and Tony Romo the remaining quarterbacks. It’s expected that the Cowboys go with two quarterbacks on their final 53 man roster- Romo backed up by Weeden. If the Cowboys feel that Vaughan is a player they’d like to develop long term, then cutting him would be risky. With the former West Texas A&M player unlikely to go untouched on the waiver wire. Does the team sacrifice a potential defensive spot to see more from a future quarterback?
