Today the Dallas Cowboys will face off against the Miami Dolphins in their third preseason game. After a close game where the Cowboys showed some improvement against the Chargers, they will get a chance to build on it. It will be the last time we see the starters before the season opener, since the fourth preseason games usually only features backups. There are a few positions that still some questions to them, and this could be our last chance to look at them.
The Dolphins had a lot of trouble with the offensive line last season. This could be a chance for the Cowboys defensive line to shine. This is the perfect time for someone on the defensive line to stand out. Will Zach Minter build on his outstanding performance last week? Will Selvie or Mincey solidify the defensive end position? Will Melton or McClain make their first preseason action? The battles of the trenches will be the battle to watch tonight.
The Cowboys want to make the Dolphins’ offense one dimensional. This week, the Cowboys will want to contain the run game. The Dolphins have Knowshon Moreno and Lamar Miller as their runningback. Moreno has yet to make an appearance in a Dolphin’s uniform, while Miller has been less than impressive. I already talked about the defensive line, and how they can shine. However, the linebackers will also get a chance to shine. Rolando McClain, Kyle Wilbur, and Bruce Carters are all fighting for a starting position at linebacker. They will get a chance to show off their run stopping skills. The Dolphins also have Charles Clay, a talented tight end that is beginning to earn a name for himself. If one of the linebackers can cover him well, as well as stop the run, they will find themselves starting opening day.
The final position I want to watch, is the offensive line. I mainly want to focus on Tyron Smith, who will have his hands full with Cameron Wake. Last season Tyron would be left alone on an island with the opponent’s best pass rushers. Wake will be a great matchup for Tyron before the regular season starts. Consider it a warm up for Tyron. The one thing I’m looking forward to is Tyron developing and the best way to do so is to go up against premium pass rushers.
The game against the Miami Dolphins will be a good exhibition game for the Cowboys. I believe the Cowboys have a lot more talent than the Dolphins and it’ll give our weaker position the opportunity to shine. I expect the Cowboys’ starters to look even better in this game than against the Ravens. It should be a fun one to watch.
