Players come and players go – that’s the reality of the NFL. Every NFL rookie now gets signed to a four year contract, often with an option for a fifth year. During the years of their first contract, coaches look for that player to show steady improvement – if they don’t make an immediate impact. The Cowboys have a few players under the spotlight this season because they have failed to improve or didn’t make an immediate impact.

The team friendly structure of rookie contracts allow teams to be patient. Rookies and free agents can be an inexpensive commodity. This has helped inspire the Cowboys to transition into one of the NFL’s youngest teams. One of my favorite quotes by Jason Garrett is: “You don’t want to build your team with guys based on what they’ve done in the past. It’s based on what they can do now for your team and what they can do going forward for your team.”

This philosophy may indicate which players not only make the final roster but who gets new contracts. There’s another factor that must be considered – Is the player playing a position where rookies make an immediate impact. If so, it might be worth finding a new player in the draft instead of giving a player a new contract.

The Cowboys have been focused on getting younger, stronger and faster recently by not giving generous contracts to players over the age of 30. This group of unrestricted free agents can sign with any team they want, so don’t become too attached.
