The Dallas Cowboys had an extremely quiet off-season. More so than in recent years, the Cowboys quietly did their draft without too much fan fare and surprisingly the Cowboys haven’t been on the national media outlets such as ESPN or NFL Network, the organization as a whole, with the exception of the Sean Lee incident at mini-camp, has gone about their business without the media circus.
For Cowboys fans this has been an odd year. The Cowboys made one splash into free agency with the signing of Henry Melton and then did some solid picks in the draft but nothing like the media frenzy the Cleveland Browns caused with Johnny Manziel. The Cowboys also have had no arrest to date as other teams such as the San Francisco 49ers have had.
So what is the difference between this off-season and the previous ones? This is finally, as much as I and a few other fans hate to admit, Jason Garrett’s team. As the turnover happened and the rosters were cleaned up, gone are the flashy players owner and Jerry Jones had been partial to and these have been replaced with quieter NFL types who show up do their job and do it without much attention. This is a team that is starting to piece together and become a team as opposed to just a group of men who show up to out show each other. As much as it burns to say, Garrett is actually doing good things with this team and although it hasn’t shown in the record, it has shown that the Cowboys haven’t gotten worse in 3 seasons under Garrett’s watch.
With training camp set to begin this upcoming week, it’s nice to have a team who’s going to show up without all the drama of an off-season with arrests and distractions. This is a team that can potentially and will more than likely come into a season completely focused on nothing but football.
As the season is fast approaching and fans everywhere are starting to feel that excitement like being a kid again on Christmas morning, that old feeling that this team could actually be something more than just an average 8-8 starts to build. In reality, this team, focused and determined even with the lesser known players on defense, could actually be something. That is the beauty of the NFL, you never know what is going to happen and that is what makes the few weeks of training camp and pre-season so much fun! Hold onto your hats the season is right around the corner!
