Tony Romo’s New Best Friend

In 2003, the Dallas Cowboys found two players that would define the team for the next decade. Those two players were Jason Witten and Tony Romo. As we all know, Witten was drafted in the third round of the 2003 draft. While Tony Romo, was an undrafted quarterback. Witten was a limited contributor to the Cowboys in his rookie year, but emerged as a Pro-Bowl calibre tight end in his sophomore year. Romo sat on the bench for three years. In the middle of his fourth year, Romo would get the chance to become the starter. From there, he never looked back.

Once Romo became the starter, he developed incredible chemistry with Witten. Witten became a reliable security blanket for Tony Romo. For years we’ve called Witten Romo’s best friend, because of his reliability. If it was third down, Witten was the man to get the first down. These two players defined our offense for years to come.

From 2007 to 2012, Witten has never had less than 900 yards and only had less than 80 receptions once. However last year, Witten saw a decline in his numbers. He only had 73 receptions and only 851 yards. This was a significant drop from his usual numbers. The reason behind this is because Romo found a new best friend and his name is Dez Bryant.

On third downs, I usually expect the ball to go to Witten. Once in a while Miles Austin would come up with the conversion or even DeMarco Murray as a check down option. Around 80 percent of the time Witten would come up with the first down. Last year, we saw less of Witten on third downs. Instead Dez Bryant was the one coming up with first downs. This year Dez was ranked 5th in the NFL for first down receptions with an impressive 67. This is a career high for Dez and it shows his development into a top receiver in the NFL.

Tony Romo and Jason Witten defined the Cowboys for the late 2000s and the early 2010s. Unfortunately age is catching up to them and their time is coming to an end. However all is not lost. The Cowboys have a new player to lead the next generation of Cowboy. His name is Dez Bryant.
