Covering the Dallas Cowboys seven days a week, we often forget that these players are regular people just like you and I. They have their issues, struggles and collections of bad habits just like any other human being. But, because they are world class professional athletes, sometimes those issues can get revealed to the public. That was the case earlier this week when Candice Romo, wife of Dallas quarterback Tony Romo, peeled back the curtain a bit about the home life of the Cowboys gunslinger.
In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, this is how Mrs. Romo responded to the question: Is Tony sort of a hoarder?
“Yes. Every golf club that he’s ever gotten, we cannot give away; every T-shirt from high school until now, we cannot get rid of. So what I usually do is, I do it while he’s gone and then I hold it upstairs for long periods of time and see if he notices it’s missing. If not, then I put it in the garage sale.”
That garage sale, which is made up of items donated by the families of Dallas Cowboys players, coaches and front office executives, is called the FIRST & GOAL charity “Yard Sale”. It’s being held later today from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Hunt Middle School in Frisco, Texas. Monies from the event will benefit the Nexus Recovery Center for Women and Girls.
Lucky shoppers will get a chance to own Mr. Romo’s used golf shoes, gloves and clubs. Other items mentioned include some of his old t-shirts and a Prada carry-on bag. But Mrs. Romo pointed out, the most prized item just might be a bean bag chair she calls “our old love sack”.
At the conclusion of the interview, Mrs. Romo described her husband’s home prior to her moving in.
“The house. It was your ultimate bachelor pad, with the giant TV and the leather couch. Kind of the living room area was a rug with all the golf clubs lined up around and like footballs. He had one chair in there and he practiced throwing the football into the chair and he would swing the golf clubs on his rug. There was a giant Michael Jordan and Larry Bird picture on the wall. Now, it’s a little more family oriented.”
Tony and Candice Romo married in May of 2011. They now have two sons named Hawkins and Rivers.
