Cowboys Sean Lee Injured at OTAs; Fourth Round Pick Steps In

A scream of frustration echoed through the halls of Valley Ranch earlier today. That ominous wail came from Dallas Cowboys middle linebacker and defensive leader Sean Lee, who had to be helped off the field during Dallas’ first organized team activities. The veteran linebacker injured his left knee during practice on Tuesday, slipping while engaged with the Cowboys 2014 first round pick, offensive tackle Zack Martin. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Charean Williams, Martin actually fell on top of Lee, possibly causing the injury.

Although no reports about the injury have officially been released, the Cowboys are certainly hoping Lee suffered just a sprain over any tore ligaments. It’s expected Lee will have an MRI as soon as possible to determine the significance of the injury. At last report, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett indicated Lee was already on his way to the doctor.

The Cowboys second round pick in 2010 has had a history of season-ending injuries. Last season, Lee struggle with an hamstring injury until torn ligaments in his neck landed him on Injury Reserve. In the last two seasons, Lee has missed 15 games due to various injuries. What fans found odd just a couple weeks ago, could actually now be Dallas’ saving grace. The Cowboys selection of Iowa linebacker Anthony Hitchens in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft earlier this month had both fans and experts scratching their collective heads. Even more puzzling was the fact that it was initially indicated Hutchins was selected specifically to back-up Lee. Although the Cowboys starting middle linebacker had been injury-prone, there seemed to be other far more important positions of need that should have been addressed first.

With today’s devastating news, the Hutchins selection now appears to be yet another feather in the cap of Cowboys’ assistant director of player personnel Will McClay. McClay was tasked with the responsibility of filling the team’s various needs in this month’s draft. And although his actual overall draft grade may still be in doubt, finding a subtitle replacement for Lee now seems a bit like the work of an NFL Nostradamus.
