The first round of the NFL Draft is officially over and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is a member of the Cleveland Browns. More importantly, he is not a member of the Dallas Cowboys. Mere hours before the Draft kicked off mock drafts had the Cowboys linked to Manziel almost across the board. He was there at number 16 and they passed on him. That’s right Texas; Jerry Jones passed on a shiny novelty from the Lone Star State and made the right pick. You may be a little perturbed, but look at the gem they got with guard/tackle/center stud Zack Martin out of Norte Dame. Look real hard. Or you can just read the rest of this post.

Martin is man at 6’ 4” 308 lbs. he can play any position on the offensive line, although with his shortish arms (32 7/8″), he is projected as an interior lineman. When you watch the tape on him the one thing that stands out is his consistency. He is always on his man, either moving him out of the way or staying right with him to make sure his quarterback is upright. He has the athleticism and mobility to pull and get upfield. He is built to complement the offensive pieces currently in place and with a healthy season, look for starting quarterback Tony Romo and starting running back DeMarco Murray to have productive seasons.

The hardest thing to watch during the Draft last night was when Martin’s name was called and the NFL Network flashed the reaction from Cowboys fans. The look of disappointment and discust wiped across faces in the crowd. They were sure Jerry was going to go against his word and select Manziel. Well any real football mind will tell you that you need to be solid in the trenches before you look to add playmakers. You can have all the sizzle in the world, but if they’re spending all their time on their backs what good does it do you? And I hate to burst your bubbles Manziel fans, but Johnny football will not succeed in the NFL with his current style of play. He’s undersized and he’ll find out that defenders at the pro level are bigger, faster and stronger than he is. Dallas did the right thing and built from the inside with Martin.

I would rather have had Pryor but I do really like Martin.

Fans might be disappointed but this was absolutely the right move. Donald was gone. Giants picked a wr, eagles grabbed someone I hadn’t seen or heard and we sured up the offensive side of the trench for 5 to 7 years. Love the pick now get defense.

Well. Finally, the Dallas braintrust did some smart thinking.

Next up, replace Leary. Then, Dallas will have a bonafide steamroller offense even I could run behind.

I’m choking on the words but, “Great job, Jerry!!!!”

Is it totally out of the realm of possibility that Jackson, Yankey, or Richardson is the highest player on their board when the time comes? Now that would be something.

      • SmartThinking

Well. At least we got our Guard and Bernadeau’s on the way out. Truth is, with his degenerative knees, Leary will move himself out this year or next.

Today and tomorrow, big Jones and company will be focusing on defense, mostly, in my opinion, only because they have to. But, I can only hope that if another big G is still on the boards at the third slot, they’ll be smart enough to get him. Then, the O-line will be fixed for a decade and Romo might have a chance after all.

I waited in Red Hook to see what Dallas would do in round one before heading for home. By the time I get there, I hope I’ll be as pleasantly surprised with the balance of the Dallas draft as I am right now.

Off topic but from your avatar I gather you are a sailor. Competed in the N2E last weekend. Wild ride.

We should talk. Lots in common. Heading home. Fair winds.
