One of the great things about working at FanSided are the connections we have with the other NFL teams. In fact, we have sports experts who run a site for just about every sporting team imaginable. Every once in awhile, FanSided asks us to get together for a common goal. In this case, the NFL Draft.
Editors from all of our 32 NFL team sites were virtually brought together to draft for our respective teams in a first round mock. Here’s my selection at No. 16 for the Dallas Cowboys and my explanation for the pick.
With the 16th pick in the NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select…
Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
Selection made by Steven Mullenax, The Landry Hat
Here is the analysis of the selection:
“Although the Cowboys preferred picks are gone (Barr, Donald and Manziel), Dallas will be thankful Lewan falls to them as he’ll help solidify the Cowboys offensive line. Dallas’ current starting right tackle, Doug Free, will be moved to guard alongside Ronald Leary and center Travis Frederick. Lewan and Pro Bowl left guard Tyron Smith will bookend the Cowboys offensive line for the next ten years. Free is in his final contract year and it’s unclear if Dallas will choose to re-sign the 30-year old. So selecting a guard later in this draft might also be in the cards. Wideout Brandin Cooks is also a possibility here.”
In hindsight, I still think this is the right choice here. It’s how the draft fell. Lewan is nasty and would bring a toughness sorely lacking on this team. Dallas would then spend the next four rounds rebuilding their defense. As for the offensive line, it’s set for the next ten years with Lewan bookending it.
I also like the receiver Cooks here. The Cowboys do need speed on offense and Cooks is a speedster with great hands. LSU’s Odell Beckham should also be considered here. But trading down might be preferred over them both.
