FanSided 2014 NFL Mock Draft: The Cowboys Catch A Falling Star

One of the great things about working at FanSided are the connections we have with the other NFL teams. In fact, we have sports experts who run a site for just about every sporting team imaginable. Every once in awhile, FanSided asks us to get together for a common goal. In this case, the NFL Draft.

Editors from all of our 32 NFL team sites were virtually brought together to draft for our respective teams in a first round mock. Here’s my selection at No. 16 for the Dallas Cowboys and my explanation for the pick.

With the 16th pick in the NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select…

Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan

Selection made by Steven Mullenax, The Landry Hat

Here is the analysis of the selection:

“Although the Cowboys preferred picks are gone (Barr, Donald and Manziel), Dallas will be thankful Lewan falls to them as he’ll help solidify the Cowboys offensive line. Dallas’ current starting right tackle, Doug Free, will be moved to guard alongside Ronald Leary and center Travis Frederick. Lewan and Pro Bowl left guard Tyron Smith will bookend the Cowboys offensive line for the next ten years. Free is in his final contract year and it’s unclear if Dallas will choose to re-sign the 30-year old. So selecting a guard later in this draft might also be in the cards. Wideout Brandin Cooks is also a possibility here.”

In hindsight, I still think this is the right choice here. It’s how the draft fell. Lewan is nasty and would bring a toughness sorely lacking on this team. Dallas would then spend the next four rounds rebuilding their defense. As for the offensive line, it’s set for the next ten years with Lewan bookending it.

I also like the receiver Cooks here. The Cowboys do need speed on offense and Cooks is a speedster with great hands. LSU’s Odell Beckham should also be considered here. But trading down might be preferred over them both.

In my opinion in this draft it’s so many talented players I don’t see the boys going offensive line not even in the first three rounds I see them maybe in the fourth & 7th to add depth they must get difference makers with some nasty to them taylor lewan is good but I don’t see him on dallas I see them making a splash in this draft were talking about me Jerry jones here..

    • cowboys maniac

I hope they do – Gabe Jackson at guard and the running game just became dominant.

      • Matty ice

They need offensive lineman no doubt but it’s so deep this year they can afford to get a good pick in later rounds if there’s better players on the board in the 1st

Keep an eye out for Cameron Fleming from Stanford in the 4th or 5th round..

          • Matty ice

I’ll go check him out In just a few thanks!!

          • David

            No problem.

Yeah David I must admitt this kid is huge and not a lot gets past him he’s a lot of beef that’s what they need only thing I’d question Is his footwork can he move quick enough to hold off some of those quicker than fast defensive lineman but he’s a guy I wouldn’t mind having on the line..

          • David

And Stanford lineman are smart and physical.

Even if they draft a tackle, I don’t see free moving to guard. I’m not saying he can’t play guard, I’m just not so sure that’s how things would play out.

  • cowboys maniac

Free is a technical player. He would not be able to stop the bullrush so doubtful he would be a guard for long. Probably too much to pay for a swing tackle so it would be the end for him if Lewan or Martin were the pick

OMG Mayock has Manziel going to Dallas and passing on Donald. I am surprised he has Donald sliding that far.
