Will Sutton: Potential Cowboys Second Day Pick

In the Tampa 2 defensive scheme, it typically sacrifices size for speed. It requires the linebackers and secondary to be able to close in on the ball quickly to make the play. This also applies to the defensive line. Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli likes having smaller defensive linemen that can pressure the quarterback.

One popular prospect amongst Dallas fans is Aaron Donald. He fits the mold perfectly as a smaller pass rushing defensive tackle. Unfortunately, it seems like the Bears will take him ahead of the Cowboys. Recently the Cowboys hosted Arizona State defensive tackle, Will Sutton. Sutton is a similar kind of prospect to Aaron Donald and is a possibility in the second or third round of the draft.

Sutton stands at 6’0” and weighs around 303lbs. He’s a bit short, but he definitely has the weight to be an NFL defensive tackle. Sutton has showed good pass rushing ability by displaying good quickness and explosion. He’s great at pressuring the quarterback. He can get penetration in the pocket by using an effective rip move. From what I’ve seen, Sutton is great at getting pressure up the middle. He’ll be a great fit for the Rod Marinelli’s defense.

There are two major negatives that I don’t like about Sutton though. The first is that he’s inconsistent. When you watch games from his junior season, he was a very impressive player. However in his senior year, he was not nearly as effective. When I watch him, he gets pushed around from time to time and is contained by the offensive linemen. This raises a lot of concerns because it brings up questions on his effort as a player.

The second concern I have for Sutton is his run stopping ability. When I watch him, he is not able to hold the point of attack. He is easily pushed back by the opponent. He is a liability in the run game. I’ve seen some team runs right towards Sutton. You don’t want to see that from a starting defensive tackle.

Overall, Sutton is a second day prospect. I don’t think he’ll start immediately for the Cowboys. However, I can see him being a good rotation player on obvious passing situation. I personally have him as a third rounder. He is similar to Aaron Donald in which he’s great at being disruptive. However, he has many other issues that make me wonder if he’s ready for the NFL.
