With the NFL Draft less than a month away, the draft frenzy level is at full tilt. And so are mock drafts. One of the great things about being a reader of The Landry Hat are the various opinions and prospects that you get from the largest Cowboys writing staff on the internet. And our mocks are no different.

Therefore, I challenged our wonderful staff of writers to complete a full seven round mock draft as if the were general manager for the Cowboys. Using the great On The Clock Mock Draft Simulator over at FanSpeak.com, each member of our staff completed their own mocks as if they were Dallas owner and GM Jerry Jones. In the following pages, you’ll see the results of all 17 mock drafts. Plus I’ve included a quick analysis or the writer themselves has included their own. We hope you enjoy it as a lot of time and effort went into crafting this story just for you, our dedicated readers.

To start things off, I’ve included my own mock on the next page…

Disappointed that Yankey, Su’a-Filo, Jackson, and even Richardson don’t show up on any mocks.

    • Krupinsky

Keep in mind that it’s a simulator, so we couldn’t just always choose whomever we wanted (and you also couldn’t trade up for anyone). So sometimes, you got in a bad spot where someone you would’ve wanted to take went just before you got to pick.

    • PaulTX

I like Richardson a lot. I thought you would be crying over Pachall. Where’s the loyalty?

      • Old Frog

I would love to see Pachall get a chance in Dallas and fully expect someone to pick him up in the 6th or 7th round, or have an UDFA contract shortly thereafter but I’m afraid Jason won’t perceive him as an RKG.

  • David

Krupinsky and Lewis had by far the best drafts. It boggles my mind how most left the safety position out or did not address it until very late in the draft. The safety position is arguably the 2nd biggest need on the team. And I also do not get why people were spending high draft picks on a center??? If the Cowboys draft a guard in the 1st few rounds like they should then Bernie would be the back up center and is already on the roster and the guard spot would be most likely upgraded. And lastly, Michael Sam in the 1st round??????

    • Chad

The center argument I sort of understand. With the release of Phil Costa, we have no halfway decent option to back Travis up, so it can work out as long as whatever “center” we select can be a plug & play at guard. Though I don’t think I would take a guy like that before the 3rd round (Travis Swanson might be the exception).

    • Cowboys Mania

All the other analysis seems good but this safety class is weak and they don’t need to be in Dallas, Joyner and Ward are the only 2 that seem to be the center fielder but still have big question marks. Get some DT, DE and G and then maybe a risk on a late WR, RB and QB. A late round safety won’t make the team anyway. A new CB would be a better play and then move Carr to safety and/or prepare to replace both of these CBs next year if they can’t improve

      • David

Ummm sorry bro but you are way off base here on a few things. Dix and Pryor both have the ability to play the single high safety. They are both widely viewed in the top twenty players overall. And moving Carr to safety is not going to happen nor should it.

        • Krupinsky

I don’t understand where the perception that Pryor (especially) is just a big-hitter who can’t cover comes from. It’s just not true.

          • David

Because people just throw crap out there with no research at all.

      • PaulTX

Putting a press man CB in zone with no help at Safety and no pressure on the QB is asking a lot. I’m not sure that Deion in his prime could have handled that. Until we get a solid pass rush and a decent FS, I would hold off on judging Mo and Carr.

    • Krupinsky

Thanks. Keep in mind also that it’s a simulator, so you have to go by what players are left for you, based on the CPU simulation, which makes it harder. Ideally, there were some players that I would’ve rather had, but I wanted a safety and DT in the first two days (three rounds), and a QB on the third day (I was looking in the 5th, because Dallas doesn’t have a 6th round pick). I would’ve preferred Aaron Murray, but he went JUST a few picks before I got to choose.

      • David

Honestly I am not so concerned at DT right now. I think they can get one in the 5th round and beyond. They need to upgrade DE, FS, and LB in the worst ways. They have signed Melton and I am good with McClain, Bass and Hayden to be honest. With Marinelli doing an 8 to 9 guy rotation I think it would be better to address all those other areas as well as the O-line and WR before a 1 tech D-lineman.

        • Krupinsky

I tend to agree. Safety has just been a problem for SO long, and I think they can actually get good value at 16 if either of those guys is there, that they need to pull the trigger if they’re there. I wouldn’t be against a DT in the 1st, but for me personally, I would just really like to take another shot at safety in the first, and finally address it.

I’m working on a Pryor v Clinton-Dix piece for my slot tomorrow.

          • David

Amen on the safety problem bro. And they have not taken a safety in the 1st round since their last pro bowl safety in Roy Williams. I will be interested in your piece on Dix and Pryor. I personally like Pryor a bit better because he can bring that enforcer attitude a bit better..

        • PaulTX

I like Ward and Brooks at Safety in the 2nd and 3rd. I think if Barr is still around at 10, Jerry moves up.

          • David

So you are going to spend a premium pick and another mid rounder on safeties???? And if JJ moves to 10 to take Barr that would be stupid and I love Barr.

          • PaulTX

JJ does stupid things. I wouldn’t call Ward a mid-rounder; he’s the third best safety in the draft and Brooks would be the fourth best. I guess if we don’t draft Pryor or Dix in the first round the season is over?

          • David

I did not call Ward a mid rounder. I called Brooks a mid rounder. I said Ward was a premium pick. I dont like Wards size for a SS and Dallas biggest need is at FS. So that is another reason I dont like him that much for Dallas. The Safety spot right now is like the O-line position was before they drafted Smith and Frederick in the 1st rounds. Dallas was drafting O-lineman in the 3rd to the 6th or so rounds. They got nothing out of it. Not one starting lineman except Free. I think Andre Gurode was the last lineman they drafted in the last decade plus that has gone to the pro bowl. And he was a 2nd round pick. They only recently have drafted O-lineman in the 1st rounds and now have one of the best tackles in the game and a promising center that has the same potential. Do you see where I am going with this.

          • PaulTX

I do. I’m just not overly excited about Dix or Pryor, but at #16 I would take either unless Barr, Mack, Robinson, Matthews or Lewan is still on the board. Yes, I would take them over Donald.

          • David

There is no way in hell Mack will be there. The only two guys with a remote possibility of being there is Barr and Lewan. But I dont know if you have seen that both Dix and Pryor are generally ranked in the top 20 players overall.

          • PaulTX

I like Pryor over Dix, and one of the two should be there at 16. Mack probably won’t be there or Barr, but you have to be ready for every scenario. I know where they are ranked, but I just didn’t see anything from their college play that made me overly optimistic. The whole DB class seems weak, but Mo Claiborne impressed me a lot at LSU, and I thought he was going to be a stud, so maybe I am a poor judge.

They should not draft a 1 tech with the 1st pick when there is enourmous needs at FS, DE, and LB. And Crichton will not be around in the 3rd round.

      • PaulTX

He should be able to play a 1 or 3. I had him ranked late 1st early 2nd along with Ealy. I like the 2nd and 3rd pick.

    • LandryHat

I love this mock! Hageman and Reid on the inside could be nice. Yankey in the second would be a steal for us. McKinnon was a scouting combine beast. Good pick. Still concerned about the defensive backfield. We’ll need big years from Claiborne, Carr and Wilcox.

  • Ashley Coonfield

I agree on the center issue. We need to be taking a guard and relegating Big Mac to a backup spot.

Nice mock. Still not sold on safety in the first. I like Murphy but haven’t heard much about him being link to Dallas. I think Archer could be a steal!

    • PaulTX

Jones from Penn State is a gem.

  • CowboyMania

most of these mocks have some good pieces – up to 4 to 5 potential starters. A couple of drafts were just god-awful – looking at you Michael Vu and Krupinski. The worst of all is picking Sam – a 5th round DE at pick 16. Just goes to show Senior Writer doesn’t mean senior intelligence. The other drafts had some great pieces – Webster, Millard, and Urschel in the 7th would be steals and getting 2-3 DE seemed to be the norm – which definitely helps this team. Getting Swanson or a G by round 4 is also a great move. Picking Pryor in the 1st is a big mistake – this team is already loaded with hard hitting safeties who can’t cover – Roy Williams 2.0 – gets so old for people to say draft a safety high but then don’t know what center fielder means. All in all – exciting players are going to be wearing the star – a couple of these mocks makes us think of Jerry 2009 and keeps us on edge when it would really be hard to mess this year up – is it possible he still could?

    • Krupinsky

I have literally no clue where you came up with the idea that Pryor can’t cover. Please, find me a scouting report that doesn’t include things like “great range” and “excellent instincts in coverage.”

    • Krupinsky

Also, I like how you refer to my draft as “God-awful” by incorrectly asserting that Pryor is a big-hitter who can’t cover, and then also praising selections of Urschel in the 7th round (which I selected) and selecting multiple DE’s, which I also did (4 DL, in total). You also iced the cake by spelling my name wrong.

Sorry David, I know you want a Safety. Dix was gone at #16, I took Lewan over Pryor. Pryor and Ward were gone by 47. I would have taken Terrence Brooks at 78, but he was gone too.

      • David

No worries. But I think you went a little overboard on the D-line haha. I know it was a huge weakness but you have to factor in they have Crawford and Bass coming back to join the 3 FA’s in Melton, McClain and Mincey. That is five guys right there and that does not include Selvie and Hayden. Now add the 5 you drafted and there is not enough room for everyone. And its likely some of your draft picks wont make the team. That cannot happen. Especially when they have huge needs at Safety and LB as well. And I can not see any scenario where Dallas drafts a punter.

        • PaulTX

The simulator was sucking it up. After the 3rd round all I was getting were RB, DT, OL, TE. I just went best available. It has the Falcons taking Ealy at #6 and Texans Barr at #1. Raiders took Clowney. At #16, Manziel and Bridgewater were still on the board.
