Free Agent Frenzy

Watching the free agency scramble as a Cowboy’s fan is a lot like going to an auction with no money.  It’s fun to watch the deals go down, see who can outbid who, but ultimately you know you are going home empty handed.

It hurts to lose DeMarcus Ware.  I know that many feel his best years are behind him, but I think he suffered by not having a healthy threat on the opposite end.  I still think we are a better team with him, but clearly we couldn’t afford to pay what Denver was willing to.

Speaking of Denver, they are building a pretty scary defense.  Given that they finished first in points (37.9 apg) and first in offensive yardage (457.3 apg), the additions of Talib, Ward, and Ware on defense might very well make them unstoppable this year.

I was talking to someone over the weekend about how the Broncos, not knowing how long they will have the services of Peyton Manning, are willing to hock their long term future throwing everything they have into winning a couple of Super Bowls over the next 3-5 years.  That’s going to put them in a hole later, but what great run until then!

I can’t say I will miss Miles Austin, he had a handful of great games and then never earned the contract he was given.  Possibly this was a result of the perpetual hamstring issue, but if you know it’s an ongoing problem you should probably spend the better part of the offseason strengthening and conditioning it.  As I’ve said before, the new CBA puts a lot more physical conditioning in the hands of the individual athlete, putting a lot of emphasis on the personal discipline of these young players.

So, once again we will have to wait until draft day (pushed back to May) to have anything to get excited about.

I would like to see us pick up somebody in the meantime to help sure up the offensive or defensive lines (offense being my first priority), and that may very well happen over the next several days.

Unfortunately, it’s going to be the type of player we endlessly debate about the strengths and weaknesses of over the next 6 months and not a tried and true athlete we will celebrate immediately upon signing.

It is what it is guys, and as long as we keep restructuring contracts to give us a the tiniest of wiggle room for the present season, (as far as cap space and free agency are concerned) the future doesn’t look a whole lot brighter.
