Who Needs A Bigger 2014: Morris Claiborne or Bruce Carter?

Fact: The Dallas Cowboys had the worst defense in the NFL last season. Fact: The poor play of linebacker Bruce Carter and cornerback Morris Claiborne attributed to that lackluster performance. Fact: Both players could be considered draft busts. But which player needs to have a bigger 2014?

The sixth overall pick in 2012, Claiborne came out of LSU as the highest-rated corner prospect since Deion Sanders, according to Cowboys scouts. The athletic playmaking ball-hawk has been anything but in his first two injury-plagued seasons in Dallas. Claiborne even lost his starting job to veteran corner Orlando Scandrick mid-season last year…and that was on the worst defense in Cowboys history! With two years left on his rookie contract, some speculated Claiborne as trade bait for the front office this offseason. If he does indeed play in Dallas this season, Mo certainly needs to prove himself worthy of the trade that brought him here sooner than later.

On the other hand, Carter recorded the best season of his career statically last season. But his struggles in coverage early on resulted in him lose his starting role for one game. The biggest issue that resulted from that whole situation was that Carter didn’t think he did anything wrong. He did an admirable job filling-in for the injured Sean Lee late in the year, but that hardly makes up for the struggles with injuries and inconsistent play in his first three seasons. And now Carter is entering the final year of his rookie deal without a hint of a possible extension. He will be literally be playing for his job in 2014.

Is this even a question? If you take someone 6th overall you expect them to be nothing short of spectacular. Mo has been anything but that. If he doesn’t have a healthy, record breaking year he WILL find himself on the chpping block.

Mo has another year left, Carter doesn’t. Only reason id go with Carter.

It isn’t an “either/or” proposition. If this team is to move forward, both these players absolutely must play exceptionally well, or all bets are off as to whether they’ll be wearing The Star in 2015.

For me I agree that both need to play much better than they have, but I feel like at the very least Carter has shown that he can play on the NFL level, let’s be honest when he was drafted much like any pick high or low in Dallas expectations were through the roof. But the most pressing concern was not weather he could play but rather if much like Sean Lee he could remain healthy, now despite the fact that he was great in the time he filled in for Sean he later fell victim to the injury bug, after his 1st year was on ST’s a get up to speed year coming into 2013 relatively healthy a new wrinkle was added & much like most of the fan base & player’s we all neglected to realize how much it would affect the team as a whole. I know you are going to mention how again Lee seemed to make it work in the 4-3 transition but given how the rest of the defense played I’d say with a full off season we will see Carter rebound, as for Claiborne if injury isn’t a problem given Marinelli’s ability to play to the strengths of his player’s I would be confident that this year’s team + the Draft will help & show growth. I am a lifetime Dallas Cowboys fan but I am also realistic and remain cautiously optimistic when it comes to them, I realize until things change for the best it will be, what it will be.

Mo played lights out in the last game against Philly and since we have Scandrick to pick up the slack I’d say Carter. When Carter’s production slipped last year it was a catastrophe for the D. When Mo went down the difference was minimal. Mo needs to get healthy and stay healthy. Carter has to play a whole lot better.
