Although it seems to be becoming less and less likely that the Dallas Cowboys will select a safety with their top pick, there is still a need at that position in their defensive backfield. And with the 2014 safety class perceived to be one of the smallest in recent memory, there are really only two options for the Cowboys in the first round when it comes to getting a high-quality safety: Alabama’s Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Louisville’s Calvin Pryor.
Clinton-Dix is said to be the more well-rounded of the two. Whereas Pryor is seen as a bigger physical specimen and a devastating tackler. Both of their performances at the NFL Scouting Combine really only helped to blur the thin-line dividing these two. At this point, either player could go before the other in the first round of the upcoming draft. But which true safety is the better fit in this revamped Monte Kiffin/Rod Marinelli 4-3, Cover 2 defense?
Veteran safety Barry Church is a sure-fired starter next season. A hard hitting tackler who lacks playmaking abilities, Dallas seemingly needs a more rangy, ball-hawking safety to complement him. One that can both tackle well and cover some of the bigger wideouts and tight ends in the league. If you’re looking for raw athletic ability, Clinton-Dix might be your choice. If you are looking for size and strength, Pryor is probably your guy. But which player fits the mold better for Dallas?
