What is Going on in Dallas?

Well, what an eventful week we as Dallas Cowboys fans have had.  First, we get notification of the hiring of an offensive play caller in Scott Linehan and promote Rod Marinelli to defensive coordinator and promote former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin to assistant head coach?  Think we got it all straight yet?

So it is my understanding that with Marinelli being promoted to defensive coordinator, Kiffin’s job is to mainly help continue to transition the team to the 4-3 defense.  I suppose with Kiffin’s experience that it is probably a good move and we all found out last year that Dallas is not equipped to play the “cover two” defense due to lack of proper personnel. Perhaps having a younger and more fire under his belt coach like Marinelli, the defense won’t finish almost last in everything next year.  I’d much rather have Marinelli as a defensive coordinator than Kiffin.  Maybe Marinelli will figure out that the secondary cannot play “cover 2” and stick them with their strengths in man-coverage.

Now this whole offensive play caller thing has most Dallas fans I know scratching their heads.  Not sure why the Dallas Cowboys keep offensive coordinator Bill Callahan if he isn’t going to call the plays.  I will be the first to say, I’m not completely sold on this new playcaller. Linehan’s resume isn’t the most impressive one seen on the offensive side of the ball, but he’ll be given a fair chance and we, as Dallas fans, will see if the offense shows any signs of running the ball more and scoring more points.

Most interesting is the coaching carousel that goes on in Dallas isn’t to be blamed on Jerry Jones.  According to ESPN, these changes are all are not being made by Jerry but are being made by Jason Garrett.  It really makes me go back to my blog last week, seems this will be a make it or break it season for Garrett.  We can only watch how this plays out because for better or worse, we love our Cowboys!

The more I think about it this might not be as bad as I first thought. It depends how Callahan handles himself. If he can stay professional about it I think it will work out. One thing I know is he can coach O line. And if it is true that Dallas had to keep Kiffin to make Rod happy then I’m for that because Rod is a great D coach. One more thing has to happen for this to be a successful move and that is Scott needs to run the ball if they are successful in doing that then this offense can be very good.
