This week the Dallas Cowboys will welcome the Green Bay Packers into Cowboys Stadium. The game will pit two of the most storied franchises in NFL History against each other. This year though, this battle may not be epic, but rather one of attrition.
They call Green Bay, Wisconsin “Titletown, USA.” This is the result of 9 NFL Championships and 3 Super Bowls. More accurately it is the result of the Vince Lombardi years. No matter how great the Curly Lambeau years were in Green Bay, it is Vincent Thomas Lombardi who is responsible for that moniker. That’s what happens when you deliver 3 NFL Championships and the first 2 Super Bowls.
To be fair, Lambeau’s 6 NFL Championships laid the ground work for the nickname to be bestowed, but it will always be Lombardi for whom the dynasty is remembered. Curly Lambeau of course is the namesake of Lambeau Field where the Packers play and where the Cowboys come to visit on Sunday. Lambeau’s 6 titles spanned a 30 year period. Lombardi’s 5 happened in a 9 year span. Hence why Lombardi is so revered.
Well, that and he took over a team that was 1-10-1 and turned it into a dynasty. Lombardi’s first two years we rebuilding years. So in reality, his 5 titles spanned a 7 year period. If you ever want to understand why Lombardi is associated with winning, if the History doesn’t impress you Google “Vince Lombardi quotes” and read for yourself. There’s a reason why the Super Bowl Trophy bears the man’s name. He was perhaps the first coach ever consumed and possessed by winning.
