This week’s update to the FanSided.com mock draft has a new name linked to the Dallas Cowboys’ first round pick. After the initial picks of defensive tackle and safety, Sayre Bedinger latest mock draft has the looking Cowboys elsewhere. Bedinger explains:
21. Dallas Cowboys: Trent Murphy, DE, Stanford
“Dallas upgrades its defensive front by getting one of the hardest working players in the Pac 12 here, Trent Murphy. He’s been very consistent for Stanford, and has great size for a DE in a four-man front. He’d add some needed toughness up front.”
I’ve talked about Murphy as a possible first round draft pick for the Cowboys in my recent article Top Ten 2014 Draft Prospects For The Dallas Cowboys First Round Pick.
Again, I’m not convinced defensive end is the Cowboys’ most pressing need. I’d prefer to see them draft a defensive tackle or safety here. But defensive end will definitely be an area of concern in 2014.
It’s fairly obvious that All-Pro DeMarcus Ware’s best days are behind him. And free agent signee George Selvie has been painfully average as the season has wore on. Third-year defensive end Tyrone Crawford should return from an Achilles injury he suffered early into training camp. And though there is always a chance Anthony Spencer will re-sign with the Cowboys next season, Dallas’ salary cap issues make it improbable.
As for Murphy, he’s a rangy player with a big frame and high motor. He has put up big sack numbers for Stanford this season and is a bona fide first rounder. And Dallas could definitely use more pass rush on this aging D-line.
