2014 NFL Mock Draft: Cowboys Pass On Manziel To Address Defensive Line Needs

Our sister site, NFLmocks.com, is doing their first NFL mock draft of 2014. And in it, they have the Dallas Cowboys passing up on Heisman Trophy winning Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel to address their defensive needs at tackle. That’s assuming the Cowboys defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, is still employed in Dallas in 2014 and they are still committed to the 4-3 defense. Here’s what of NFL Mocks had to say about the Cowboys’ projected first round pick:

#17 – Dallas Cowboys – Timmy Jernigan – DT – Florida State

“In order for the Monte Kiffin defense to work the Dallas Cowboys have to get better up front.  Injuries have hurt them but they also don’t have the best personnel.  One area in need of help is defensive tackle.  Timmy Jernigan profiles as an ideal three-technique.  His quickness and speed allow him to shoot gaps to rush the passer while also sliding down the line to blow up running plays.  Under Rod Marinelli, his athletic promise could be harnessed to great effect.”

Lambert goes on to predict the Philadelphia Eagles will go on to select Manziel with the following pick.  Obviously, Dallas is locked for the next few years with Tony Romo as their quarterback. Still, as Romo continues to sputter in this ineffective offense, the idea of bringing in a player like Manziel as his successor is intriguing.

If Manziel comes out and falls in the draft to the Cowboys’ pick, they’d be certifiable not to take him if, nor no better reason than for trade bait or for getting multiple draft choices for him then or further down the line. But, this argument is whimsy! With his reputation, if Manziel comes out, he’ll be snapped up so fast, it’ll be over almost before it begins. And Dallas then moves on to selecting giant defensive linemen with a mean streak because Jerry Jones has finally come to his senses and chosen players that can actually help this team win. Hey! It could happen!

Manziel isn’t very good IMHO. I think he is headed for the Tebow legacy.Trade bait would be good maybe. We need DL, OL, and safety help more than we need an average QB to backup Romo.

Manziel is a system QB that will bomb at the pro level!

Cowboys will have to go with Tony, he just signed for all that cash, boy does he make JJ look “smart”. JJ needs to stop the bulls*%$! and draft DL and OL the first 3 rounds. Offense sputters because we can’t run. Defense can’t stop anything because we can’t put pressure on QBs. Heavy pressure on a QB will make even the greats make mistakes. The Manziel project would be fun to watch if he fell to the later rounds, that will not happen.
