Our sister site, NFLmocks.com, is doing their first NFL mock draft of 2014. And in it, they have the Dallas Cowboys passing up on Heisman Trophy winning Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel to address their defensive needs at tackle. That’s assuming the Cowboys defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, is still employed in Dallas in 2014 and they are still committed to the 4-3 defense. Here’s what Erik Lambert of NFL Mocks had to say about the Cowboys’ projected first round pick:
#17 – Dallas Cowboys – Timmy Jernigan – DT – Florida State
“In order for the Monte Kiffin defense to work the Dallas Cowboys have to get better up front. Injuries have hurt them but they also don’t have the best personnel. One area in need of help is defensive tackle. Timmy Jernigan profiles as an ideal three-technique. His quickness and speed allow him to shoot gaps to rush the passer while also sliding down the line to blow up running plays. Under Rod Marinelli, his athletic promise could be harnessed to great effect.”
Lambert goes on to predict the Philadelphia Eagles will go on to select Manziel with the following pick. Obviously, Dallas is locked for the next few years with Tony Romo as their quarterback. Still, as Romo continues to sputter in this ineffective offense, the idea of bringing in a player like Manziel as his successor is intriguing.
