The Dallas Cowboys signed defensive tackle Everett Dawkins off the Minnesota Vikings practice squad on Tuesday. Dawkins was brought on to replace DT Marvin Austin who was waived earlier this week after playing in just one game with the Cowboys.  The reason for Austin’s release was a back injury. So, here are 10 things you need to know about the Cowboys newest acquisition:

10. Despite being taken in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Vikings, Dallas actually had a third round grade on Dawkins. The Cowboys liked the fact that he is a high-motor player despite being considered slightly undersized for the position at 6’2 and 292 lbs.

Okay. Give this man to Marinelli for a week and let’s see if he can motor. Apparently, as the Dallas scouting department has so effectively proven, there are a lot of very capable defensive front line guys floating around out there in the ether world. Although it’s hard for me to say it with a straight face, I have to give Jerry Jones creds for his first round pick, particularly since everyone bounced on him for not getting an anchor defensive lineman. If this Dawkins guy was, in fact, ranked as the 20th best defensive lineman in the draft and he’s now in our camp along with Frederick, then maybe there’s hope for the defense after all and Jones can focus on upgrading the very heart of Dallas’ team through the next draft: the offensive line.
    Kudos, scouting department!
