Every game in the NFL is crucial - it’s a long season. For the Cowboys who now stand at an even 3-3, the next four games may determine whether they taste the post season or once again turn their eyes to “next year”. Why are the next four so critical? Because the winner of the NFC East is likely to have a final record no better than 10-6 or 9-7. An 8-8 record is even a possibility – and don’t look for either wild card team to come out of this division. Here are the remaining games on the Cowboys’ schedule:
December is once again a brutal stretch where the ‘Boys might be lucky to win one of those games, maybe two. With 3 wins under their belt, that means they need to “find” another 4 or 5 wins somewhere in the schedule. One would think that the Giants and Raiders games are two wins – but not guaranteed as the Giants won’t lose all 16 and the Raiders with Terelle Pryor are a different, improved team. But, for the moment, let’s count those as wins.
The Cowboys have yet to win this year on the road – but they won’t likely go winless. With 3 of the next 4 on the road, this depleted team is going to have to find a way to win away from AT&T Stadium.
I don’t think we are going to be able to beat a very hot Saints team in their dome – although we typically play them tough and have beaten better New Orleans teams there. But, seems unlikely right now. That leaves what should be winnable home game against the struggling Vikings – who just installed a cast off QB as their starter. But, maybe a new start is what Freeman needed and he has talent that could light a fire under them.
Then, there is the road game against Detroit that has proven with Reggie Bush, they are much improved and are more than capable of beating the Cowboys in their stadium. The Lions have only played two home games so far and have not lost yet.
That leaves this weekends road game in Philadelphia which will determine the early season favorite to win the division. It seems crazy to think of this as a must-win game just 7 weeks into the season, but looking ahead I’m afraid it might be. Unless the Cowboys can manufacture some major upsets over the course the season, this weekend is one of the 9 0r 10 wins they are going to need. Let’s hope the team and coaching staff are preparing for this game with that in mind. Go Cowboys!
