Dez Bryant Sparks Cowboys Over Chargers, 21-13 Halftime Report

It was a slow start for the Dallas Cowboys today as they face off against the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium. Dallas quarterback Tony Romo missed on his first four passing attempts as the Cowboys offense sputtered in the first quarter. They finished that quarter punting three times and getting just only one first down.

On the other side of the ball, Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers and his offense found early success against the touted Dallas defense. Rivers connected with rookie wideout Keenan Allen for a 31 yard gain over Dallas cornerback Morris Claiborne. Then Rivers lofted a perfect pass over Cowboys linebacker Bruce Carter to running back Danny Woodhead for a 26 yard touchdown.

Romo and the Cowboys offense heated up at the start of the second quarter. After dropping his initial reception, rookie wideout Terrance Williams caught three balls on the Cowboys first scoring drive. Romo goes a perfect 6 for 6 on that drive that ended with a Dez Bryant jump ball endzone catch.

After the Cowboys defense was able to hold off the Chargers offense once again, wideout Dwayne Harris 38 yard punt return set up a missed 56 yard field goal attempt by Dallas kicker Dan Bailey. That gave the Chargers’ great field position and led to a Nick Novak 36 yard field goal, giving San Diego the lead 10-7 mid-second quarter.

The Dallas offense came charging back as running back DeMarco Murray had a big 13 yard gain. Then Bryant finished off the drive with a 34 yard touchdown with just over two minutes left in the first half. Cowboys took back the lead, 14-10.

But the Dallas defense wasn’t finished scoring. Linebacker Sean Lee took a interception 52 yards for a score escorted by half the Cowboys defense extending the lead, 21-10.

Rivers was able to recover from the “pick six”, and led his team back down the field for a 42 yard Novak field goal to end the first half. At halftime, the Cowboys led the Chargers 21-13.
