The regular season is almost upon us, and I know I am not the only one who is excited. I’ll be honest, I don’t know what to expect from this season. In the midst of the offseason, I was very pessimistic about the 2013 Cowboys. From what I’ve seen from preseason, I have reasons to be encouraged. I can see the Cowboys doing well and making the playoffs, or I can also see them going 6-10. The more I think about it, I realize that consistency will be the key for the 2013 Dallas Cowboys.
Last year the Cowboys were featured in many close games. They had twelve games that were decided by seven points or less. We know how talented the roster is, but it always seems like we play to our opponents’ level. From the Browns to the Ravens, it always seemed like the Cowboys were an even matchup. This is where consistency is important.
What I want to see this year is for the Cowboys to play at their own level, rather than their opponents. If we are facing the Raiders, we shouldn’t play as well as the Raider. We should be able to perform at a higher level in a consistent fashion. From what I’ve seen from preseason, the Cowboys have greatly improved their defense. Of course there are also some holes for the Cowboys; however those holes aren’t big enough for us to give up on the season already. The holes will limit the Cowboys, but it should not stop us from playing consistently.
The 2013 Cowboys have a lot of potential. Our passing attack has always been strong, and if the defense can step up, this team can be dangerous. I’m encouraged by a lot of things such as Dez Bryant’s improvement, the new defensive scheme, and the always reliable passing attack, but that is all for naught if we cannot sustain a certain level of play. The Cowboys need to learn to play at their own level. If they do, they have the talent to go to the playoffs and possibly the Super Bowl.
With the new season comes hope. 32 teams have their eyes set on the Lombardi Trophy. Some teams have a better chance that others, but that doesn’t matter. Right now, everyone has a clean slate. After this week, one team will begin their story on how they won the Super Bowl. For all we know, it could be the Cowboys. It all depends on their consistency, because that will be the key to their success.
