The Dallas Cowboys, like all the other teams in the NFL, had to trim their rosters down to 75 players on Tuesday. In order to make that number, the Cowboys had to release nine players from their team today. Those players were: WR Anthony Amos, TE Colin Cochart, G Dennis Godfrey, WR Jared Green, LB Deon Lacey, K Brett Maher, DT Jeris Pendleton, WR Eric Rogers, QB Nick Stephens, and CB Brandon Underwood.
That’s a total of three players cut who were on their receiver corps. Amos was always a fringe player to me. He would appear as a blimp on the radar and just as quickly disappear. Both Green and Rogers I had high hopes for. But neither showed the same confidence and consistency in the preseason as they did in training camp.
Cochart could be a decent number two or three tight end on any NFL roster. Unfortunately, those spots are already filled up in Dallas.
And the release of Stephens means Alex Tanney impressed coaches enough to win the third quarterback job, if there is one. This despite Tanney signing a week into training camp and Stephens having the upper-hand by participating in both the OTAs and mini-camps.
For many of the other players on this list, it was simply a numbers game.
In order to complete the roster move to 75 players, the Cowboys also placed defensive end Tyrone Crawford and center Ryan Cook on Injured Reserve.
And in somewhat of a surprise move, Dallas placed All-Pro defensive tackle Jay Ratliff on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List (PUP). This means Ratliff will not be able to play in any games for the first six weeks of the regular season. Rumors just two weeks ago said Ratliff would try to be on the field by Week One. But apparently his off-site rehab didn’t work out as he planned. Ratliff suffered a hamstring injury just prior to training camp.
Here’s a list of former Cowboys also cut from other teams today:
QB Stephen McGee cut by the Texans.
K Billy Cundiff cut by the Jets.
FB Chris Gronkowski cut by the Chargers.
WR Raymond Radway cut by the Rams.
CB Mario Butler cut by the Broncos.
CB Teddy Williams cut by the Colts.
WR Terrance Copper cut by the Chiefs.
DB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah cut by the Saints.
