Dallas Cowboys Lock Up Defensive Future In Sean Lee

Many a great defender has stepped into the Dallas Cowboys locker room and strapped on a silver helmet with a royal blue star on either side. Darren Woodson, Deion Sanders, Dat Nguyen, and Dexter Coakley are just a few of the many stalwarts that no doubt crossed through your mind. Perhaps there is one more potential great that can be added to that list in Sean Lee.

News broke yesterday of Sean Lee signing a very lucrative six year deal worth over $42 million.

The news comes as a relief, knowing that Sean Lee seems to be one of those talents that you don’t want to miss. His tenacity and intelligence are qualities that everybody wants in their starting middle linebacker. It was good to hear Jerry Jones was able to close the deal on this one.

Lee’s time in Dallas has been nothing short of spectacular. He’s strong, quick, and has a nose for finding the football and often times able to separate it from the guy carrying it, but Lee’s career thus far has probably left most of us wanting something more.

Lee is no stranger to injury which might be reason for some of us to ask why Jones was so quick to pull the trigger, especially with so much money being involved, but I don’t think many of us are willing to complain.

After experiencing the loss of Lee last year, his absence was painfully obvious. That coupled with the loss of Bruce Carter was far too much for a patchwork defense to absorb.

Lee’s potential for greatness is there. He has the tools to truly be one of the next great players to have ever played in a Dallas Cowboys uniform. Honestly, I don’t think I can say that he really has a weakness to his game. The only thing hindering him from all time greatness is that of the injury bug.

If Sean Lee can stay on the field consistently over the course of the next six years then no doubt will it reflect in the success of the Dallas Cowboys on the field. You can bet it will be one of the best investments that Jerry Jones has ever made as well.
