There is always a ton of pomp and circumstance surrounding the NFL Draft. Not so much for the NFL Supplemental Draft. The Dallas Cowboys have drafted five of the 42 players drafted since the it’s inception in 1977. But this year, the Cowboys will probably stay firmly on the sidelines, as will most of the league.
There are six players eligible collegiate players for this year’s NFL Supplemental Draft: DE James Boyd – UNLV, DT Nate Holloway – UNLV, DE Toby Jackson – Central Florida, WR DeWayne Peace – Houston, WR O.J. Ross – Purdue, and DB Damond Smith – South Alabama. Out of this group, only the wideout Peace out of Houston is predicted to be drafted by NFL.com.
Former VP of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys (1960-’89) and current NFL.com senior analyst, Gil Brandt, tweeted everything you really need to know about these players:
Of 6 players in NFL supp draft, Purdue WR O.J. Ross is best, but he’s small and won’t likely get drafted. Not a good group. – @Gil_Brandt
The Supplemental Draft is now done entirely via e-mail. Just like the NFL Draft, there are seven rounds. And the selection order is also the same as the “real” draft. If a teams selects a player in the Supplemental Draft, they also forfeit that corresponding selection in their following year’s NFL Draft.
The Dallas Cowboys past Supplemental Draft selections include: QB Steve Walsh – Miami (1989), RB Mike Lowman – Coffeyville CC (1989), TE John Davis – Emporia State (1994), DT Darren Benson – Trinity Valley CC (1995), NT Josh Brent – Illinois (2010).
The Cowboys allegedly put in a bid for Baylor wideout Josh Gordon during the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft. Gordon ended up with the Cleveland Browns, who selected him in the second round. He finished last season with 50 receptions for 805 yards and five touchdowns. Dallas selected his teammate, Baylor receiver Terrence Williams, in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
The NFL Supplemental Draft is scheduled to take place today at 1:00pm EST.
Update: No players were selected in the 2013 NFL Supplemental Draft. Rumors are the Cowboys are interested in DB Damond Smith out of South Alabama as a possible free agent signing.
