What do you do when The Greatest Basketball Player of All Time, who also happens to kind of be your boss, passes along some highly recommended advice?
You listen… We hope that is exactly what Dez Bryant will do!
If you remember, back in April, Bryant broke the news via his Twitter accout that he had signed with the Jordan Brand. Last week, Wednesday, ESPNDallas.com posted an article stating some stellar advice Michael Jordan passed on to Dez Bryant. He basically told our wide receiver to “stay out of trouble.” Personally, I think Dez can keep his mind right. I think he can stay out of trouble and stay focused. He has too much at stake not to. He has an insane amount of talent and let’s look at an obvious fact, past mistakes, in most cases only fuel future success.
I feel like this advice, though meant for Bryant and his Jordan Brand endorsement deal, can be applied to more than just that. I had a humble little what-if thought that came to mind when I read the story about MJ and Dez. It is my belief that what we do off the field has a direct impact to the results we get on the field. Staying mentally tough, staying in shape, staying focused, staying out of trouble. What if more athletes (both college and professional) took MJ’s advice to heart? What would it look like? What kind of athletes would we have as role models for our youth? Now don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of athletes that stay on track than those who don’t. Unfortunately, we don’t hear a lot about them because there’s no drama in that and let’s be honest, even the best of us can’t help but read on when we see something scandalous in the headlines.
Off-field actions determine on-field success.
Like most of Cowboys Nation, I have such high hopes for this upcoming season. Both on and off the field I want to see our ‘Boys be good… Scratch that, I want to see them be GREAT! I want to see them hoist the Lombardi in Jersey in February… Tell me that thought doesn’t give you chills!
Cheers to Staying Out of Trouble, Dez
