With the 31st Pick In The 2013 NFL Draft, The Dallas Cowboys Select…

After waiting over 3 and a half hours, the Cowboys finally made a first round selection taking Wisconsin center Travis Frederick with the 31st overall selection.  The Cowboys had traded down earlier in the evening giving their pick at 18 to the 49ers in return for the 31st pick overall and the 74th pick in the 3rd round.  This is a bit of a shocker.  The Cowboys needed interior line help but Mike Mayock and many others had Frederick as a 3rd round selection at best.  ”This is a bit of a reach”, Mayock said.

Very disappointing for Cowboys fans who hoped that by trading down the Cowboys had a master plan.  Instead, they take a 3rd rounder in the bottom of the first round and leave safety Matt Elam, a coveted safety on the board for the Ravens to pick at #32.

Here is what NFL.com had to say about Frederick before the draft.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

Thick-bodied interior lineman with experience at guard and center. Possesses upper body strength to turn his man out of the hole, help one guard in pass pro with one hand. Gets his hands up quickly after the snap, keeps them inside. Also moves his feet well to get angles, combo from tackle to linebacker. Churns his legs as a drive-blocker, gets movement. Anchor is strong, does not get bulled backwards when man-up and late blitzers bounce off his chest. Works hard to sustain and finish one-on-one blocks. Regularly used on the move whether at guard or center, fits on blocks well whether stepping up to the second level or outside the hashes. Shotgun snaps are reliable with good velocity.

WEAKNESSES

Girth in the middle takes away some quickness behind the line, takes time to get around the tackle and gets tripped up in traffic when on the move. Gets out-quicked by interior blitzers and occasionally stops his feet in pass protection. Can lose his balance when leaning into his man, though he recovers well enough to get back in the play.

BOTTOM LINE

The Badgers’ streak of providing the NFL with top interior line prospects should continue with Frederick because he uses his toughness and thick body, in addition to excellent technique and flashes of foot quickness, to move defenders whether at guard or center –where he played during the 2012 season and probable NFL spot. A top-75 selection is likely.

Tough evening for Cowboys fans.  In the war room, Stephen Jones was seen high fiving another person.  What?  Why? Draft grade so far in my opinion: D.    I wish I was a Minnesota Vikings fan – they got 3 first round picks that will help them immediately on defense.  We got a journeyman back up lineman – at least that is what it feels like tonight.  And, the NFL Network team is laughing at the Cowboys as they sign off.  Ugh.

Simply put – AWFUL!!!! You have got to be kidding me. Jerry blows it again we need a GM who knows what he is doing.

Another example of JJ trying to prove he’s smarter than everyone else. Reach for a player he could have had in the 3rd round because everyone else misjudged the player’s true value….Really?!!!

Sure, since the Vikings “won” the draft I want to be a Vikings fan too! What have the Vikes won other than 3 1st rounders in a weak draft class?

    • Cowgirls

At least they didn’t pick a 3rd round player with a 1st round draft choice. But hey, none of them have as nice beard as Frederick does!

I dont like the pick any more than the rest of the fans do but Frederick does grade out higher than both Pugh and Long selected by Giants and Bears, both who run a 4-3 and also would have been a great fit for Floyd yet passed. This pick wasn’t great but its not the end of the world either. How many fans were saying that JJ needed to select OL with the first 3 picks at least? Not my choice but everyone got the lineman they wanted

        • http://twitter.com/OldFrog75 Old Frog

Agreed but he could have taken Warford at 31 and Frederick, Barrett Jones, or Dallas Thomas at 74 or 80 and then we’d have at least 2. Not sure how this shapes up now.

          • ‘mericas_team2013

Im going with Bennie Logan at 47, another reach, but they have been high on him all off season and they passed on Floyd for a reason.

  • Are You Kidding Me?

First you trade down 13 picks in the first round and only get a 3rd round choice in trade for doing so. And then you pick a average center in the 1st round that you could had in the 3rd round. Hows that great GM going for you?

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Not only Elam but Cyprien was still on the board as well. Not to mention Warford and Short. Still can’t believe they passed on Floyd. Must be something going on with him we don’t know about.

Vaccaro was picked at 13….then the 49ers take Eric Reed with OUR PICK….then they pass on Elam at 31. I guess it was Vaccaro or NOTHING. We need to zero in on DJ Swearinger S South Carolina or Jonathan Cyprien S FIA in round 2.

What a shocker! Pokes could have taken him much later. I thought they would take S Eric Reid at #18. After the trade I thought S Matt Elam was their pick at #31 or even RB Lacy cuz I know Jerry Jones likes to do things his way. I wonder how much input Jason Garrett had on the “Grizzly Adams” pick????
