It comes as no surprise that the main focus of the off season thus far has been that of finding all the loopholes available to create more wiggle room as far as cap space goes. Now that Tony Romo and his contract are out of the way all the talk falls back on Anthony Spencer…and Doug Free?
By now most of you have probably caught wind of the front office asking ol’ Doug for a discount for his services. The funny thing is there’s probably not one Cowboys fan out there who doesn’t find the attempt justified.
Free’s play over the last couple of seasons has been far from good and it’s easy to see now that his contract was questionable.
First instinct is to automatically blame Jerry for the bad move but that’s probably unfair considering how most of us, including myself, thought Free would live up to and was worth his extension.
Unfortunately, it is what it is and the leverage is about equal on both sides. Sure the Cowboys can cut him but the cap hit would be just about as damaging. If they cut him after June 1, they could split that hit over two seasons, but would any worthy free agents be available by then?
On the other hand Free has to realize he’s not going to make anywhere close to what he’s making in Dallas and might be wise at least look like a team player. In any case, the pay cut looks like a long shot.
I won’t jump on my soap box and start ranting about how Doug Free is selfish and worthless if he refuses to take the cut, because he like anybody else realizes that several million dollars is worth a few insults and negative tweets. I do, however, hope that he is a better person than I would be and do a solid for this team in dire need of help both financially and athletically.
Any way you look at it, it looks as if Free’s time as a Cowboy is coming to an end. You can’t help but feel that in the least the mere request of a pay cut is going to cause some awkwardness between the organization and Free. Without a doubt that was expected by the front office which can only lead me to believe that Free more than likely will not be a Cowboy come this time next year.
Hopefully, Free surprises us all.
