The Debate Intensifies: Who Should the Dallas Cowboys Take at 18?

No matter what position the Cowboys grab at 18 they are going to have other needs. If they pass on one of these four positions in the first they will almost certainly fill at least 2 others of them in this Draft, and I am talking about potential starters. If not in 2013, certainly soon after. Given the uncertainty last year at Center, I find myself unable to not grab a starting Center in one of the first three rounds of the Draft, which in this year’s Draft means either the 2nd or 3rd round since there is no first round obvious Center. Barrett Jones might have been if not for the injury he suffered which has kept him limited during the scouting process.

I think that given the contract just given to Tony Romo and the obvious glaring need to fix the OL that my first two picks would be on OL. If I were Jerry Jones or Jason Garrett for the next three weeks I would go after Tyson Clabo at RT, and then I’d draft Jonathon Cooper and Barrett Jones with my first 2 picks. It is my not so humble opinion that the only thing that separates Tony Romo from a Quarterback like Drew Brees is the quality of the Offensive Line in front of him. I’ve talked to some stupid Cowboys fans who think Romo is the problem and they mock the need for him to have a top notch OL given the weapons he has to throw to. I guess those people never saw the OL we had in front of Troy Aikman and his incredible weapons when the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in four years.

The final option I will discuss is a trade down. I can see a trade up for a special talent like Lotulelei or Warmack. If the two Guards are gone along with Lotulelei and Johnson, I think Jerry and Jason will try to trade down. The NFL provided a perfect opening for this with the movement of QBs this week. QB is still the most coveted and over hyped Draft need of every season. Speculation that Geno Smith and Matt Barkley will fall out of round 1 is silly. I can’t see the Cardinals passing on Smith just because they stole Carson Palmer. If a team comes calling with an offer because a QB they want is there, I can see the Cowboys taking it and adding another pick. This Draft is deep at OL and DL, and I for one wouldn’t mind capitalizing on the bounty with an extra pick.

That’s the kind of discussions I will be having at the water cooler. How about you?

OL – if the top 5 are gone, DT. Lots of depth – The best option is trading down and getting all 3 in the 2nd, Guard, DT, and safety. double up on any of these 3 positions in 3rd, RB in 4th, CB or safety in 5th (if not in 3rd), TE in 6th. Done – give me your GM money Jerry.

Jerrah should pick @18 Warmack, Cooper, or Fluker in that order who ever is
available or Sheldon Richardson should these guys be gone. I like Kawann Short DT, John Cyprien FS, Eric Reid FS, John Hankins DT in the 2nd round. In the 3rd I like Barrett Jones OC, Terron Armstead OT, Stephan Taylor RB, or Leveon Bell RB. This protects the QB, gives
him time to check down on WRs , and opens up running game. Points win games. Oh
    and Doug Free is cut!

Eric Fischer, Lane Johnson, and DJ Fluker were all 2nd round prospects at best before Mathews and Lewan decided to forgo the draft. I wonder where they would all rank now if both were available? No way is there that many tackles ready to go that early….
