2013 NFL Mock Draft Update: The Dallas Cowboys Select…

The third FanSided 2013 NFL Mock Draft of the year has been released.

The folks over at FanSided.com will be releasing weekly mock drafts right up until the big day in April. While it may seem a little early for mocks, what’s next is always on the mind of die-hard Dallas Cowboy fans.

The draft boards are sure to change a lot over the coming weeks, so it will be fun to track all the players the Cowboys take in these mocks.

Let’s get to it.

With the 21st pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select:

Jesse Williams, Nose Tackle, Alabama

Due to very unfortunate circumstances, the Cowboys now have very little depth behind starting nose tackle Jay Ratliff who has been battling injuries. The team will need to add players along the defensive front and nose tackle has become an immediate need. A hard-working player like Jesse Williams at the nose could be exactly what the doctor ordered in Big D. It may be a reach, but it fills a need.

Jerry Jones hasn’t been know for drafting for need over talent. But in the last couple of years, Jason Garrett’s influence seems to have swayed Jones to that philosophy. But Williams in the first round is a stretch and the Australian probably could be had in the second round, at this point. With Jay Ratliff’s future in Dallas very much in doubt, defensive tackle makes a ton of sense. It simply depends on who is available and how the Cowboys scouting department rates the numerous first round DT candidates.

Now, on the pick.

The 6’4, 320lb. senior noseguard from Alabama is still relatively new to football. But so was Jason Pierre-Paul when he came out.

ESPN’s Draft Analyst Todd McShay, who ranked Williams as high as 30 in his top 32 NFL draft prospects for 2013, had this to say about him: “He clearly is just still learning football. He has freakish, raw natural talent and moves really well. I’m not sure he’s a first-round pick, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he comes off the board in round two.”

So this week, the pick is Williams. What do you guys think?

I’m a fan of Jesse Williams, but not in the first round, he plays very tough in the trenches. Would like to see Chance Warmack in the 1st round….

Author.. you have NOT watched the Cowboys much… 1st Round OL, 2nd OL, 3rd OL, 4th OL then what ever… in FA OL, the waiver wires OL. HOPE THAT HELPS

The Cowboys have enough projects; you definitely don’t draft 1 first round. . No way I would drop a 1st rd pick on a mid to late round talent. The biggest hole on this team has been the OL and it needs to be the top priority. Like Parcells always said, “We are in the player acquisition business, not the potential business.” There are some very experienced OL in the 1st round this yr. NTM Ryan has been using a lot less 3-4 and more 4-3 and nickel, NT isn’t the priority it was when using a base 3-4.

I would love the Cowboys to draft OT Jake Matthews 6-5 305 Texas A&M in the 1St round just to solidify the tackle position and let Doug Free walk.
