December 30, Cowboys @ Redskins

This is why Cowboys fans watch football. Twice a year, we get a real-life Cowboys vs Indians game, and all bets are off. It doesn’t matter if one team is 15-0 and the other is 0-15; pride is on the line in this great rivalry, and the final game of the season for the Redskins does not disappoint.  Rob Griffin (as Justin Tuck would call him) did alright for himself as a rookie, with his athletic ability apparent.  Andrew Luck won the Offensive Rookie of the year award, but not by much. The Redskins are playing for pride, as they were long eliminated from the playoffs, and the Cowboys fight for a first round bye.  Romo continues his MVP season and torches the Redskin secondary, but someone Rob Griffin seems to will his team past the goal line often.  This game comes down to the 2 minute drill with the Cowboys up by three, playing defense.  Griffin’s athletic ability keeps him away from trouble the entire game, but Ware wants the sack record, and he gets it.  Ware blows by Redskins OT Trent Williams and blindsides RGIII for his 23rd sack on the season, giving him the single season NFL sack record, and successfullly knocking the Redskins out of FG range.  The last resort is a Hail Mary pass that is intercepted by Cowboys WR Andre Holmes, who was put in on the last play of the game.  The Cowboys get a first round bye, and will watch to see who they will play; the winner between the Lions and the Eagles.

I hope that everyone enjoyed the season as how I see it unfolding.  I realize that my opinion is biased as a writer because of my long history and devotion to being a Cowboys fan.  I am also a realist.  The reason that the Cowboys lost five games in 2011 was due to horrible secondary play, and a 4 minute offense that could not convert.  Both aspects of the Cowboys roster have been improved and it is NOT unrealistic to see the Cowboys at 12-4 next year with a first round bye.  This team has tons of talent, and we are extremely young at many of the core talent positions.  For us, Cowboys fans, the worst part of the off season is over.  In the famous words of Hank Williams Jr…

If the Cowboys give up 35 points to any team (including the Saints, Eagles or Giants). Rob Ryan has some explaining to do.
Two LBs are first round draft picks. The other two LBs were first round injured talent taken in the 2nd round. In other words, all four LBs can be considered 1st rounders.
Two CBs are 1st rounders. A DL is a 1st rounder (even if he is a back up run stopper).
How many defenses in the league have SEVEN 1st rounders? I bet none. Everybody has been complaining about the D and drafting for the D. But when you look closer, this D has had a lot of very high draft picks devoted to it.

Good observation! Rob Ryan really doesn’t have any excuse. What worries me a little is how many completions are coming Claiborne’s way. I’m hoping it’s just rust from not playing or having any off season… we will see.
