This week has been a rough one for the Dallas Cowboys, especially Dez Bryant. By now everyone knows the unfortunate situation that has been brought to the worlds attention. The speculation has ranged from mild assault such as grabbing and pushing to more serious matters of punching and hitting. By no means do I consent to any form assault on a woman or mother for that matter. I just want to shed the lite that nobody other than Dez and his mother know exactly how serious the altercation was. With that being said, I am confident that the truth and its full entirety will be revealed and punishment will be handled accordingly.
In this article I would like to put a little more focus on Angela Bryant (Dez’s mother) and Dez’s relationship and the facts that not too many people know about.
It shouldn’t be expected for a child to be able to support another child properly. Dez was born when his mother was only 14 years old. Dez’s father is almost 30 years or so older than his mother, this is not the typical way that athletes are raised. Dez Bryant had to deal with his mother being arrested when he was only 8 years old and witness her get handed a four year prison sentence for narcotic sales. She is currently on probation for another narcotic possession from just a few years ago. Because of the support that Angela could not give to Dez he lived in 8 different homes throughout high school, and lived with a girlfriends relative during college. These are just some of the facts from a poor childhood of a player that every person in the media wants to thrash on.
Dez may have poor debt management and like to wear saggy pants in the mall, but this was his first arrest. The media likes to draw attention to his behavior pattern but fail to mention the pattern of his life. Statistically Dez Bryant was most likely to deal drugs or be in prison with the background he came from. He overcame the odds and became a talented player in the NFL, that alone should show the world something positive about him. I am in no way saying that these are reason to forget about Dez Bryant’s recent issues with his mother, but people should know his background. Judges look into the background and childhood of any person convicted of a crime before sentencing them and so should we.
Dez obviously has some unresolved issues with his mother and it shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody. Although discipline is definitely necessary, counseling for Dez and his mother is needed and should be more of a concern than just punishment. I do not feel that trading or releasing Dez Bryant will or should be the approach of the Dallas Cowboys. I think the commissioner will hand down punishment and this will be forgotten. I believe Dez will not let this affect his future and like he has done his entire life, he will overcome the odds.
