DeMarcus Ware's 25 Sack Comment Not So Farfetched

There has been a lot of talk recently about league sack specialists Jared Allen and DeMarcus Ware.  Mostly that fact that they both agree… 25 sacks in one season is possible.  I don’t disagree with the two in this.  Mostly because the league has turned into a passing league and the opportunities are there every game.  However, of the two, I think the one with the best chance to do it is DeMarcus Ware.

I’m not just saying this because I’m a Cowboys fan.  Though, it certainly has a small part in it.  I’m saying it because 1) DeMarcus Ware is the more talented player of the two and 2) DeMarcus Ware has a lot more in place to help him.

DeMarcus Ware has 99.5 sacks through 8 years.  That is a ridiculous stat.  For those who aren’t really aware of how substantial that is, know that DeMarcus Ware is the 2nd quickest to that mark.  He has been able to muster those stats with little help and constantly facing double teams.  Yet it’s his motor, combination of finesse and power, and football IQ that allows him to be so effective.  It is without question that DeMarcus Ware will go down as one of the best pass rushing linebackers to ever play the game.  In 9 seasons, Jared Allen has 105 career sacks.

In addition to pure talent, DeMarcus Ware has something else on his side… Rob Ryan.  That might not be appealing to you but it says a lot to me.  Rob Ryan is the number one reason that the Cowboys are touting a very good front 7 and now have 2 shut down caliber cornerbacks at their disposal.  Rob Ryans defense scheme is complex but is designed for DeMarcus Ware to succeed.  Ware is moved all over the place, into multiple positions, to exploit matchups and force QB pressure and sacks.

A lot has been made about how the new cornerback situation will improve the pass rush.  A lot of people have speculated at it and even laughed at that.  The truth is though that that’s true.   The ability to utilize island corners with exceptional man coverage skills will increase the amount of time it takes an opposing QB to make accurate reads.  After a while the opposing offense will be faced with taking the sack or throwing a pick.  The Cowboys sack totals should see a pretty good increase this season having corners who can actually play.

25 sacks maybe a lot to imagine.  I still think that if anyone in the league today can do it, it’s Ware.  No offense to Jared Allen but he doesn’t have the talent or defense around him to break the record.  Who knows for DeMarcus… It seems everyone thinks this could be a special season.  This would certainly be pretty special.
